Hello,
I´ll try to make this long story short....
- A few weeks ago my FS Amilo Si1520 ran out of battery because it wasn't plugged in (nothing spectacular)
- When I restarted it, windows didn't start but a menu came up with different choises of fail-safe mode. Non of them worked.
- My first aim was to rescue my files so I tried different recovery tools. With knoppix linux boot-disk i got a hold of my hddr and could copy all the files to a USB-drive.
- I then tried to reinstall Windows XP Home Edition with my recovery disk. The installation goes on for a few minutes but then it stops an says that it can't find any hard drive (eventough the drive was found both in knoppix and in BIOS)
- I tried some hardware diagnostic tools on boot-CD, but finally I gave up and bought a new hard drive. A WD SATA 160 GB, 2,5" instead of my old that was the same but 120 GB.
- The problems remain. The HDDR is found in BIOS, but not when trying to install windows. I tried with the one that came with the latop and also with a windows XP i downloaded, same roblem.

Does anyone know more things to try? Thankful for any help.

Did this laptop come with Windows XP or Vista? Since it has a SATA hard drive there may be problems with the motherboard chipset/BIOS/XP not reading the SATA hard drive. Do some research on this forum about SATA problems.

It came with XP. I bought it new in fall 2006 and the original hard drive was also SATA.

Since yesterday I´ve made some pgrogress. When I disabled something called AHCI in BIOS the hard drive was found and I was then able to install windows. But now AHCI has to be disabled all the time for the computer to work. And after some reading about AHCI it seems like the best way to controll the hard drive (or whatever it does)

Does anyone know if AHCI makes a big difference... should I leave it like this or try to get it working with AHCI... and in that case does anyone know how to get it working with AHCI?

Well,

AHCI is faster but it brings a lot of problems with it. Most rescue disk wil not recognize your AHCI hard disk and will not be able to copy your data.
I f you want AHCI you will have to find the Windows xp driver put it on floppy and reinstall your Windows. Or you can integrate a AHCI driver into your existing windows
Anyway keep it simple and disable AHCI for ever!!
