Vista Re-Install

jeruvy23, on Tuesday April 22, 2008 11:02:12 AM
Hello,

I have purchased an Acer and was wondering if I can uninstall all the bloatware using PC Decrapifier and Add/Remove Programs, create an imae with Norton Ghost and use this as my backup dvd image rather than Acer's recovery partition. My goal is to get a perfect clean image without junk. Any input from Acer users would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

Do you have a proper Vista DVD that came with your PC or is the recovery partition the only thing you have?

If you have a Vista DVD with the full OS on it without the Acer crap, then Shuck is right. (Uninstalling always leaves orphan files and other problems behind. Fresh install is much better.) His point about deleting the recovery partition also makes sense if you have the Vista DVD handy and will never need the Acer recovery.

If you DON'T have a Vista DVD, then I understand why you want to do what you want to do, with uninstalling the crap and imaging the drive, because it's the closest you can get to a clean install. However, if you don't have a Vista DVD, keep the Acer partition intact so down the road if you change your mind or need your Acer factory install back, it's there for you.

I just got an acer notebook and i HAVE to take norton off. It slowed down my previous computer noticeably. I was able to sort that out as i was good with XP but now i have been given these green discs from acer and i dont know if a have a proper copy of vista to install after i format (to eliminate ALL norton files). I also don't want to put the trial office that came with the notebook as i have my own full version i bought recently. Please help!

Hi there, I have a ACER4520 latop, and at this present moment am in the middle of a re-format cause I think I picked up a virus where all my exe files are gone (cmd.exe,nstrui.exe etc etc etc) thus making my DVD burner unoperabe, my Windows media player unoperable my internet air card unoperable, you get the picture?

Ok this is what I have used before and it worked thn, sould work again.

IF YOU HAVE A WINDOWS XP FULL CD insert it in the drive(DVD) then turn off the comp. Then restart, start hitting the F2 button till the BIOS screen opens up. Go to the 3rd setting (BOOT) andchange the sequence to CDROM as 1st. Then save and exit. Then restart the comp. The windows XP setup will start and it will ask you if you want to partition the drive, click YES. Let is start partitionning 1/2 way and shut the comp off. (It had already formatted/deleted everything you had in it) NOW take your VISTA Factory Restore disk and put them in, in sequence. At the end of it you have a clean install of Vista.

But this dont partition the drive. Instead of having drives C and D now you have everything on drive C.
If you wanna patition, you need DISK PARTITION SOFTWARE.
Have fun, I planon having some too tonight doing this. And above all best of luck!

Yeah it's much better to reinstall vista than just to uninstall the acer programs.

this might be a late response but if you havnt uninstalled the e-recovery program / D: drive then you should be able to set your computer back to factory settings. when you first power your acer machine on, you see the acer boot screen where it gives you the option to go into the BIOS, before this passes hit atl + f10 (you might have to hit the combination more than once). this will boot the recovery partition stored on your D: drive rather than the OS installed on your C: drive. you should see a screen come up saying "now starting recovery" or something like that. it will ask if you really want to set your computer back to factory settings, click yes once or twice and voila, your machine will be well on its way to a fresh start. unfortunately this will reinstall all the annoying acer programs and whatnot but it will at least take care of any viruses you may have (without needing a disk) that is making you computer unusable.
