How do I factory restore my Sony Vaio? [Solved/Closed]

Dangelo12395 - Latest answer on Oct 29, 2012 09:08AM
My sony vaio froze a few weeks back up, i done a hard shut down and since after it wont start up properly. It goes to the main sony vaio screen and then straight to a black screen with a flashing cursor (underscore) at the top left. I have tried all obvious methods to try and fix it but i still cant get it to work. I understand ot is possible to do it but then all the memory will be lost. Is there any suggestions how i could fix this annoying problem without losing my important data.Pressing f2 does allow to me to go into bios. I do not know anything more that I can do than do a factory restor, but I do not even know how to do that :/
Thanks

start up computer and immediately start tapping f10. This will take you to a black screen with white writing. Hit enter. The next screen gives you two options- hit the skip button. Next screen check the box and hit next. Your computer will be restored to it's factory settings in about 20min. Make sure your computer is plugged in.

This works however a full C: drive restore takes over 60 minutes since the Vaio recovery center (Sony's post-OS software/driver preinstall automatic deployment pak) takes forever. Also, the restore partition is very specific to the exact model of your Vaio. I tried to use a similar model Vaio restore partition (exact same OS version) and the recovery boot refused to start with a warning like: Recovery partition was not designed to work on this machine.
The more I see how Windows 7 was programmed the less I like it (contrast XP).

For my laptop though, you have to start the wizard, then skip so you can do it!

1. Click the "Start" button on your Task Bar. In Windows Vista, the "Start" button will look like a blue button with the Windows logo.
2. Locate and click the "Control Panel" option located inside of your "Start" menu. This will bring up your "Control Panel" screen.
3. Double-click the "Vaio Recovery Wizard" button. This will bring up a window.
4. Follow the instructions given during the Vaio Recovery Wizard. When prompted, confirm that you want to reset your Vaio to its original factory settings.
5. Allow the computer upwards of an hour to properly restore itself to factory settings.

hello,

the flashing underscore is a common but sadly, dreaded error, and it means the operating system has failed/missing. You are unable to boot the computer. This can be fixed but there is a VERY complicated process and you will probably require a technician. the steps are below.

1. Download an ISO reader such as PowerISO (free)

2. Download a software called Plop Linux or Offline NT Password And Registry Editor (which are basically portable operating systems with a command prompt (cmd) interface.

3. Make a CD by burning the image of the ISO downloaded to a disc.

3.Put a storage device in the PC and back up what you can to it using that. This will be very hard process, whereby you will need to find the right commands to use. Im not sure of them myself but my old ICT technician did it for me, who i have no means of contacting. Perhaps google-ing for the commands could teach you.

4. Once you have backed up what you need, insert you're recovery CD, format the hard drive, re-install the OS and restore you're data.

Hope i can help, good luck

try formatting the hard drive alone (without a restore) then once thats done, make sure no external storage devices are connected, and then restart the computer with the formatted HDD. and try installing the OS then. How many partitions do you have, and how many physical hard drives do you have (internal)

oh, alright. Then normally, you can find an OS CD for the laptop that you burn to a CD but that isn't available right now, so you'll need to get hold of one, perhaps contact the computer supplier.

To format the disk, with the OS disc inside, start up the PC and select your language, then keep going until you see a screen with the HDD's, and select it and format (if you can get an OS disc).

Alright, but remember, A 64-bit OS must be on a 64-bit computer because the wire connecting to the processor has a width of 64-bits per cycle of the clock, not 32. So a 32-bit OS will fail. You're Windows 7 is 64-bit, right?

The E:\Sources\Install.wim is an error on the disc, try another recovery CD. If that doesn't work then your CD drive is failing and you could try with an external one.

So the computer works with the vista disc, but not the 7 disc, right?

You should buy a new set of recovery discs for this Vaio. Vaio don't sell them, you would need to get them through a third party vendor.
