Hello,
k, I have a Windows XP and I have downloaded service pack 2 and 3. I have also downloaded the setup for itunes version 8.0 (or whatever the newest version is) from the apple website. I currently have itunes 7.4.3 and I have just recently purchased an ipod nano (Apple's newest version of it). I need to download itunes version 8.0 so I will be able to use my nano (which is not compatible with my current version). However every time I try and download the version, I get a message that says, " There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." (I downloaded the service packages from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/) My question is do I need another service package or what program do I need to complete the installation of itunes 8.0?

Also, if anyone could respond before January 10th that would be awesome XD (since that is the last day I can return the nano and get most of my $150 back O_O)

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.5

IF U R GETTING A XP SOFTWARE INSTALLER ERROR MESSAGE WHILE DOWNLOADING ITUNES FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW

Try removing Apple software update using the steps in this article:
XP
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

Vista
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

If you get an error uninstalling you need to do an installer cleanup.
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/

To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install Cleanup

Remove any entries you find for Apple Software update.

Download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Save the file on you desktop rather than running it from your browser.

THIS IS STRIAGHT FROM THE APPLE WEBSITE

I have been seeing a lot of the same questions regarding this issue, simple solution is to remove the registry entry for quicktime in the regedit on your computer, do this after you have removed quicktime ( or tired)
- easy steps are to download the windows install clean up form Microsoft, ( their article numner is 290301)
- install it and remove, itunes, quicktime, apple software updates, apple mobile device, bonjour and anything that says ipod or apple
- then run the windows install clean up to amke sure none of these are on that list
- then remove any folders in the c:/program files folder with the same names
- next remove the quicktime entery in the c:/windows/system32 folder
- then check the regedit and remove the quicktime entery ( be careful when using the regedit)
- run a disk clean up from the system tools
- restart the computer, download the stand alone version of quicktime ( without itunes) install it first, then download and install itunes
- if these steps do not work their may be an issue with your windows installer package
