File server vs. SAN/NAS

Hello,


In the SMB market what are the technical differences between a high capacity file server and a SAN or NAS ? with disk capacity growing close to 1TB, what would it benefit to have a SAN or NAS in a small-to-medium business network infrastructure over a high capacity fileserver with multiple GB's or TB's of space ( using a form of RAID) ?

It really depends on your needs. availability, capacity, speed, latency, etc. will all play a role.
You can't look at a catalogue and decide one is better than the other.

Always decide what you need 'exactly', then pick hardware that meets or exceeds your criteria.

For my home network we have both a file server and several backup to devices across a dedicated SAN.

From a topology perspective this may be clearer, since our 'file server' sits on the edge of our network, but our SAN is deep inside on it's own segment.

If you have WAN/MAN criteria then that will follow you need to take this into consideration.
