Hi,
>Make sure you are suing the DirectX 9.0c that came with the game.
>Update all of your graphics and sound drivers.
>Try a reinstall - this works in a lot of situations.

Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista should try removing their sound card drivers and allow Windows Vista to install it's default sound drivers. do note the make and model or your sound card before removing it.

this is how you should proceed to remove your sound card drivers:
>Open the control panel
>Check the programs and features tool to see if your sound card drivers are listed here
>If they are not, open the system tool in the control panel
>Click on "device manager"
>Locate your sound card in the list, it should be in the sound, video, and game controllers section
>Right-click on the video card name and select Uninstall.

if you are using Sigmatel® onboard sound cards, you need to install all Windows Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com.

You can backup your profile. This contains your saved game files. Then when you reinstall you will just have to move your profile folder back over. Thats all :o)

Here is where your profiles are saved.
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles

Easiest way to fix it... uninstall the game and reinstall it. Then install the latest full patch. It should work fine after that.

If you are still having problems, try posting here: http://www.infinityward.com/forum/

Is your sound device showing up in Start --> Control Panel --> Sound ?
Does your sound work for everything except cod4 or is it gone all together?

If your sound device is showing and is still not working you can uninstall the driver and reinstall it. This should fix your problem.

To uninstall Sound Driver:
Start --> right click "My Computer" --> Manage --> select "Device Manager" from the list to the left. Now find "Sound" and click the "+" by it to expand it. Now right click your sound device and click on "Uninstall" to remove the driver.

To Install Sound Driver:
Restart your computer and run windows update. Windows Update will find your sound driver and install it for you.

OR

If you have a sound card installed in your computer: Restart your computer you can go to the manufacture's website and download the latest driver and install it.

Had call of duty 4 installed for a couple of months, everything was fine till a week ago
multiplayer would not start, it would flash on the screen then go to the tray, it would open
from there but would do the same, only way to close it was to ctr, alt, del, eventually gave up
after scouring the web and got no answers, and ended up reinstalling twice, the first time didn't
work so I restored my pc to an earlier date, reinstalled again and it worked, but I noticed that my
skype was gone, downloaded it again and installed it, wtf ?? cod4 not working again ??
closed skype from the tray and cod4 worked ??

if you have skype, try shutting it down and c if that helps !!

I have also noticed in vista I have ti have a mic plugged in for the mp to work. If it is not plugged in the game will crash and I will get the message saying that "iw3mp has stopped working". Don't know if this helps anyone, but it works for me.

SOLUTION FOND!

I too had the same exact problem but i have found the solution.

Go to your Control Panel then click sound.

Under the "Recording" tab make sure the Stereo Mix is on.

I've had stereo mix on since last May, now after my dad just downloaded a gigantic vista service pack the error pops up?

Anybody know about this recent pack (about a week ago or so)?

Guys, go to control panel, uninstall your sound hardware, !NOT YOUR DRIVER! it will ask if you want to remove your driver, press no, then restart your computer and bam, owned. it'll now work, contact me over email if u want.

All you need is a headphone with a usb jack . plug it in to one of your usb ports on the computer and guess what.... it works. for some reason a headphone must be used for multiplayer mode. security code where ?
nothing below this message .

Trust me it may sound wierd but yes all you need is to have the headphones/speakers in the right place and you MUST have the mic. (if it doesnt work it has something else to do and im sorry that i couldnt say the fix)

Okay i came across this problem because my headset is broken and the sound does not work, so i tried unplugging it and playing but then it doesnt work, like you all said i figured out that you have to have a mic plugged in. *BUT* If i plug my mic in, is there anyway i can make the sound come through my computer speakers? because if not i guess im stuck playing cod4 with no sound... please help. thank you

You dont have to plug in the headphones, just the mic. so you should still be able to plug your Speaker system in the Audio Out port and the mic in the Mic In port.

Also make sure you have the latest patch installed cause I have been playing it with out my mic plugged in and it is working fine now.

You guys already have the solution, plug your headphones and mic into the front panel and the error "iw3mp has stopped working" will cease. You should only have to do this once after your initial install of windows.

no need to reinstall cod

My problem was, just plugging in did not stop the error. I was not getting any sound to come out of the headphone jack.

I had to go to the HD audio manager , which was not included within the install of 7. (Sound drivers were included, but not the audio manager).
I had to download the audio drivers from the mobo manufacturers site. I could have gone direct to realtek as I could see an ALC chip on the mobo, but their download times are horrific.

once in the hd audio manager (not the windows one, Realtek's one in my case), I had to disable front panel auto detection.

This means that the audio is pumped to the front pannel always, in addition to the rear.

inherant problm.....sound comes out of both, speakers and headphones... solution, turn of speakers.

Cod4 works fine, with or without heaphones plugged in now.

hope it helps
