Drivers Needed ASAP

Jamescracker, on Friday April 18, 2008 01:58:34 PM
Hello,

I'm a Marine going to Iraq in a week, and I got this laptop to provide me some entertainment while I'm over there. My problem is that I filled up my 250GB HDD completely. I tried getting an external drive (Seagate FreeAgent), but my computer refused to work with it. It would detect it as "Other Device", it couldn't find the drivers for it online, and it couldn't find the drivers when I pointed it to "C:\Windows", including subfolders obviously. I tried deleting C:\Windows\INFCACHE.1, which was a bitch to do. This didn't help either. The device does not show up in Disk Management or My Computer. I ended up returning that drive and getting a new one, SimpleTech pininfarina 320Gb. Same problem, the only difference is that the computer detects it as STECH Simple Drive USB Device. Still nothing in My Computer or Disk Management though. Sony VAIO does not sell OS CDs with their laptops, so I cannot reinstall the driver database. What can I do? Why can't the manufacturers or Microsoft just post the drivers online? Are there any third-party drivers available out there?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

" Itried deleting C:\Windows\INFCAAHE.1"

A corrupted infcache 1 is usually the cause for problems like yours, did you manage to delete it?

If not.. you will need to edit its file permissions to give Full Control to the User Group before you will be able to delete it.

here's a step-by step guide
