XPCMan you should be slow to state such things that you clearly don't know about :-)

That said - new Linux user. Check out winehq.org for a free Linux program that will let you install MANY Windows applications including Internet Explorer 6. There is even a program you can Google called IEs4Linux that connects to Wine and allows you to install IE7, 6, 5.5, and 4.

ALSO - if Wine is a little complicated there is a $29 program called Crossover that really to be honest is the easiest way to install Windows programs on Linux - and works flawlessly. I'm running Office 2007 on an Ubuntu 8.10 computer through IE6 as I write this.

For all those wondering why I would run those apps on linux - I'm a professional web developer at a company that uses an Exchange server so I have to have IE in order to test websites despite my hatred for it, and really need Outlook for Exchange connection. Yeah - evolution can do it - but let's face it - it sucks at it.

Anyways - welcome to the linux revolution my friend.

Hello!

Why to use MS IE? I mean: do you have some specific needs?
Cause MS Internet Explorer has so many lacks of security that you should stop using it even under MS Windows...

Uh. . . That would be because outside of pinguin land people often creates websites that only run correctly on IE. Then some that claim to run under firefox won't run under firefox on a linux OS (only firefox on windows). Even a hardcore linux fan should know why IE in wine is needed.

I hate it when people ask how possible something is, only to have everyone ask why they would want to do that. Why they would want to isn't what they asked... so if you can't help him everyone stay quiet.

Because often users doesn't ask what they want but how to do a way to do what they want and sometimes there are other (and maybe better) ways to do it.

I highly doubt anyone asking how to install a specific browser on a specific platform was looking for a "just use firefox" answer... REALLY good probability he knew what firefox was if he knew was linux was.

I doubt he knows what you can do with firefox. Some website just check the UA sent by the browser.
For some website the solution is as simple as installing the add on "User Agent Switcher" and switching to "Internet Explorer 7". But as he doesn't explicitly say what he really wants nobody will be able to find such other solutions...

I helped a lot of people on the french website (right click on my pseudo, follow the link) and i met a lot of people who don't have any idea on what Linux can do, and which software they have to use.
So when you say that "REALLY good probability he knew what firefox was if he knew was linux was" you can't imagine how wrong your own probability is... Don't forget that now a lot of people have to learn Linux cause they buy some Aspire one...
If you begin to help them without knowing what they really need, you won't be really efficient.
So don't see any intrusive behavior from me, i just try to understand what they really need...

Try this before giving up:

1) Run Firefox
2) Tools -> Extras
3) Find and install the "User Agent Switcher" extension. Currently its version for FF 3 is 0.7.2.
4) Restart FF
5) Tools -> Default user agent -> pick your "flavour"
6) Go to your evil, evil IE-friendly site.
7) Register in your bank a polite request to support other browsers.
