Steam/Valve (Half Life 2)

Hello,


Bought Half Life2 2 years ago. Desktop not up to it. Did work but problems. Newer laptop but Steam just wont allow me to play the game, can't get beyond the endless updates and downloads. I only have dial-up but it is updated to 96% and wont go further. Any advice? Is it possible to bypass Steam? It is an original, but the tech-support no longer exists. Please help, It's very infuriating!!

I sometimes have the updates process stall. I will usually right-click and select "pause", the right-click and select "resume". After that the process will typically finish.
