Mac OS X wont work!

Hello,
I just downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.5. it dpwnloaded fine, but when i tried to install it, something popped up that said, ''the installerpackage 'MacOSXupd10.5.5' can not be opened. The Bill of Materials for this package was not found.''
then when I clicked okay, it looked like it was going to let me install it, and it said it was, but instead of 'continue', it just said 'close'
please help!!
