Hello,
I need to send in my regular laptop for some warranty work, so I've pulled-out my husband's old Toshiba Satellite A75 to use in the interim. However, it won't connect to the internet with explorer or mozilla, and Google-Earth won't connect either. I've tried both wireless and via cable. It picks up the connections (shows the status as connected, and speeds for both wireless and local area are 10.0 Mbps), under activity it shows that packets are being sent but none are being received. No problems are detected with either type of connection. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get the internet up and running on this laptop?

Thanks!

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Is there anyone else connected to the network? If so make sure their computer is on, and go to Start>Run> type in cmd> type in ipconfig and take note of their ip address.
Then go to your laptop and go to cmd again (Command prompt) and type in ping [their ip address here] without the brackets.

For example, I would go to my desktop, make sure it is on and logged in, and open the command prompt, and type
ipconfig

It would return a few stats, including the ip, which is 192.168.2.1
Then I would go to my laptop, and enter command prompt, where I would type
ping 192.168.2.1

Then it would try to ping it 4 times and give you a stat saying whether it succeeded or failed.

Let us know the results. Good Luck!

Unfortunately, I don't have any other computers on the network. I'm using a cable to connect at home (having to switch between my 2 laptops). I checked the wireless connection at a hotspot, where I found that it wouldn't work via wireless either.

Ok, I was able to borrow my neighbor's wireless connection for the Toshiba. My HP (other laptop)is being sent in for warranty work because it cannot pick-up any wireless networks. So, hopefully, both computers don't need to be on the same network to ping...Assuming using computers on different networks is ok, the result is that it timed-out all four times:

"Request timed out." 4x

Followed by:
"Packets: SEnt= 4, Received= 0, Lost= 4 (100% Loss)"

To connect to the internet you use a Public IP address, and to connect to the network you use a private or local IP address.

You both were using private IPs but on separate networks.

You would need to connect to their network as well for that to work I'm afraid to say.

Something quick you could try to see if you are getting ANY network connection at all is to ping google.com
It's quick and lets you know if your computer is getting connection and just for some reason withholding it. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help. My husband was able to resolve our issue. It seesm that the Toshiba lost a network driver, so we were able to successfully reinstall.

I'm having the same problem with my laptop.

I have tried pinging it with another desktop computer and it has failed all four times. Yet when i did ping it with google.com it was successful all four times. I have also tried all the internet options in the tools menu with connection and advanced settings. I am on a Wi-fi network and have a strong internet connection. I am also able to use AIM and other applications with internet use, but not my web browsers. I have both internet explorer and mozilla firefox.

Please Help

Thanks
