Hello,

I am having troubles with a 2gb Toshiba SD memory card.

The card was in my digital camera (Nikon Coolpix s51) for a couple months without use, and when I went to take pictures one day, the camera couldn't read the card. I never had any trouble with it before. It just stopped reading it out of the blue.

I took the card out of my camera, and inserted it into the SD slot on my laptop computer (HP Pavilion dv6000). Usually, I can find the card in My Computer, and access its contents. Now, however, it's like my computer doesn't recognize the card, either.

There are a lot of important documents and other meaningful files on this card, so I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Configuration: Windows Vista
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

The amount of time without use is rather irrelevant, but the age of it overall is.

SD cards tend to have a rather short life, so I wouldn't be suprised if it was dead. If your computer doesn't even recognize it, and neither does the camera, then it's not either of them, but the card having a problem. Now the card doesn't exactly have any troubleshooting, it's use is just, insert and use. Not much to it, so unfortunately when problems arise, unless you can at least see it on the computer, you're out of luck my friend.

I suggest you look for one online.

I figured as much. It's about a year old. So, there's not really any hope for it?

You can google around for a write-protection format utility for flash drives but unfortunately I don't have a link or idea offhand, otherwise I would give it to you. A few of them exist, but they are usually made for one thing or another, and you would have to make it work with your SD card.

Other than that, which even that it's only a 50% chance that the card is repairable, there's not any other option. Good Luck!

What was your card doing? did you get any type of message? I took my card in to get pics printed. when I removed the card ordered my pics I put the card back into my camera and a messaged pops up card needs formatting. however, if I format it says I will loose everything on memory card. I am trying to delete some pictures as the kiosk will only let me access 995 and I have 1100 on this card and of course the ones not visable are the ones you need. I also got home put the card in the printer doesnt see card, put the card in a card reader, doesnt see card.
Help anyone. these are insurance pictures of the storm that went thru MN and WI back on memorial day weekend. We cannot get the balance of our insurance check with out these. If anyone can help I would be ever so grateful!!!

This is my EXACT problem! I took my SD card to a kiosk at CVS, printed a few pictures, and brought it home to upload to my computer. But now when I turn the camera on it says "card error" or when I plug it in to the computer, it tries to reformat. Please, please tell me you found a solution to this!

I had similar problem a year ago. Out of the blue the Fujifilm FinePix S5700 digital camera could not read my nearly new 2GB Kingston SD memory card that was readable in my laptop. A Canon 32MB SD card shipped with the camera did not work either. Testing an old 16MB xD card showed positive results. And once the 2GB SD was re-inserted miracle happened and it started working. No problem for nearly a year when it stopped working again, this time with a memory full message and no matter how many times I re-inserted the xD it did not help. I guess I need to buy a big xD card and ebay the SD:(
It is bad engineering or manufacturing. The SD bit as Fuji cameras were built with xD card reader originally and a modification meant they became able to read SD type media, too.

My 512MB XD card initially also can't be detected via a card reader from my computer. It was due to my stupid Fujifilm camera that made the card content HIDDEN. Just unhidden the folder from your control panel and then you should be able to view the DCIM folder & pictures. Cheers

If you have problems with your memory card in 80% of all cases the controller of your card is damaged and no software or card reader can help. You must separate the memory chip and dump the raw data to recover your data, look here: http://card-recovery.biz/us/service.php

Hello, just found this post. I've had the same problem, my card isn't recognized by either my computer or my camera anymore, its as if its not there! I did notice the little prongs that fit into the camera from one of my readers seems bent, I'm not sure if that is what messed up the card or not. I bent the prongs back and other cards work, but not this one. I thought the problem was that the prongs ruined this card. But after reading these responses, I'm very concerned. I've had 2 times of failing cards with all of the pics from my children being lost. And now that I think about it, it was both after I went to Walgreens, used their computers to have some of the pics printed, and the cards went bad afterward. Now I'm thinking its not the prongs at all but the kiosks at Walgreens that ruined my card??

I paid a lot of money the first time to have as many of the pics recovered as possible, and I was told by that company not to delete pics from my cards anymore. I don't really know how to explain what was told to me, but basically they said that when you delete a pic, there is still a "space" on the card for that deleted file, and when you take another picture, it goes over that space, and so on and so forth. So as you delete and retake pics, they are all going over those spaces, and when you try to recover, you get a picture of all sorts of little bits of all those deleted pics. They recovered pictures of mine that had been taken to sell stuff out of my house, and those pics came up and many of the pics of my kids did not, as if the deleted files were easier to find than the ones I had saved. So after that, I buy multiple cards to use, never ever delete a pic, and I have tried to have card for different purposes. Like a card to use for pics to sell stuff on ebay etc., and a card for vacation, and a card for kids etc. so I don't have to worry about wanting to delete a bunch of stuff.

What to do about my newest problem has made me lose a ton of sleep. This card was great, I thought I was doing everything right, and now the card seems to not work at all. I only printed some of the pics for my daughter to use on a school project. It had the birth through first year pics of my son, including pics I took specially once a month to put in a 12 month package for his first year, to put up on the wall next to my daughters' 12 month pics. Now I can't access them and can never go back to duplicate that. I never printed them out unfortunately until I was ready to do it and now its too late I fear. I am clueless what to do??
