No sound after installing Vista Ultimate

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. It came with Vista Basic. I had to re-download Basic once and the sound didnt work. I finally got it working. Now I have upgraded to Vista Ultimate, and guess what, no sound again. What do I do? Ive went to a dozen websites. I went to Device Manager and it says it does not see a sound driver. It had Sigma Tel on it.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

Wow i been all around the forum and no one seems to know how to solve no audio on vista.
