How to increase sound output

Hello,
i am new to linux... and have just installed ubuntu... which have fabulous features. but i cannot get a great sound output... the sound o/p on my windows was quite loud.... so i would like to know if there exists a possible way to increase sound output!!! thanks!!
also i have downloaded wine0.9.9.orig.tar.gz package but i dont know how to install it.. plz help me with that!!!

Configuration: Linux
Firefox 3.0

Have you tried an amplifier dude... seems the best way for me to get a good output!

I'm not an expert in sound systems but a good amplifier or good stuffs should resolve your problems!

Everybody install VLC, then play some music on it. Increase the voume to 200%. How does it do that? I want that to be like that ALL THE TIME. How do i make it like that?
