Your IE is probably set 2 block certain downloads. Recommendation: Download and install Mozilla Firefox, then browse the web and download software using Mozilla. U'll learn that it's much easier and more secured with Vista..........Good Luck!!!!!!!!

Hi rubrami281

Thank you for your reply to my not being able to download programmes onto my laptop set up with Vista.
You suggested that I download Firefox.
Alas, security blocks that too. I switched of the windows security but left Nortons on as afraid of a hit if everything off.
As mentioned before I am not very clever with computers so I need to be given advice as though I am totally stupid.
What do you suggest I do now please. Your input is really appreciated

OK, let's try something else:

Click on Tools (in the menu)
Select Internet Options
Click on the Security tab
Click on the Custom Level button
Scroll down to Downloads: Automatic prompting for file downloads
Click on Enable
Click OK

When u complete this task, try 2 download and install Mozilla again. If it works 4 u..........go 2 www.download.com and download and install AVG Free Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. AVG will tell u that Norton might b an issue. Go ahead and UNINSTALL Norton. AVG is 100x better. When you've installed the 2, b sure 2 update it's definitions then run a full system scan with both. Run Malwarebytes 1st and then AVG. Just 2 b sure that it wasn't a virus blocking your downloads. If all is well, then my work is done and I wish u luck. If u r still having problems, let me know and I'll continue 2 look 4 a solution.

I had the same problem with a new laptop upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. I ran all the Windows Updates, shut down, and tried again the next day. Now I can download the .exe files, find them & install programs, no problem. I am using IE7

Hi Kristina
Thank you for yor input.
This has been an ongoing problem for about 6 months or so. Programmes update each time that I go to switch the laptop off so perhaps the Windows updates are updating too. I get the message ''do not switch off your computer until all updating is complete''.
Do you think that if I insert the Windows disc like I did when I bought the computer it may help. Trouble is that it may remove all my programmes and stuff stored etc.

Hi R
I did the tools thing as you recommended that I should. Done but still cannot download mozilla or firefox. It tells me that my security settings are blocking me. It also says that I should choose a programme to allow through a port but does not give what I want to download as an option. It also says it can brouse the web to find it but not successful. I have removed Norton but it does not make any difference. The windows programme seems to be the security setting that is blocking downloads.
What is your next suggestion that I can try please?

If the site cannot be displayed, there is a virus blocking it.
If you need help, go to geekstogo.com and follow the 'Virus and Malware Cleaning Guide'

I have done everything but still can't install Mozilla Firefox or any Coupon Printer. I have put the settings where you told several others to put them, but it does not work. I don't know what to do. I do not have Norton, so that can't be the problem.

If I had a million dollars Zack it would all be yours!! Thank you so much, I've been searching for hours for a fix to my problem of not being able to save jpg files in the folder I want to and then not seeing them in the folder that Vista saved them to! Hi Zack, Nope it did not work. Told me that my settings will not allow me to download - tried to download AVG free download.
There are a lot of Enable/disable things in the list when I go via the Tools etc route. Is it possible that something there needs to be enabled.

I did as RUBRAM suggested but it still did not work
ie Click on Tools (in the menu) , Select Internet Options , Click on the Security tab
Click on the Custom Level button , Scroll down to Downloads: Automatic prompting for file downloads
Click on Enable , Click OK .
What can I try.
Thanks Blossom

Hey guys & girls...
i have a similar problem, but I'm on a regular windows Vista Desktop computer...
I consider myself better then most with computers(I program)... so I've tried my basics.. & every trick i can think of to no change...
I have been able to put AVG on my this computer, but i can no longer update it... same with anything else that tries to update... All give me a connection issue implying (spelling?) that i have a security issue that they are being blocked.. some have confirmed this...
Yes I have put it in the "allow programs" section... didn't work
I have even turned off every single piece of software that has to do with spyware/fireware/anti-virus.... (for about 2 minutes)... Nothing there either
I've done a Ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew.... nothing..
i've been trying to look up this issue, & cannot find anything...

Weirdly Utorrent still downloads for me.... it works perfectly, downloading @ its usual 500kb-2mb per second...
I have no problems downloading things... & no problems really installing.. except for one thing which requires the internet to update before it will finish installing... so it doesn't work...
-O & i doubt this has to do with security, but i cant install a printer... i get a cannot connect to printer issue...

ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD REALLY BE APPRECIATED.... -THANKS!!
p.s. send me an e-mail at domjdragon2@gmail.com with any replies

i used storage device to ransfer the programs manually, but it turns out i didn't even need it

after that i was able to download again

If you have previous versions of the Flash player, you must download the "uninstall" program from the Adobe website first, before installing the new or update version.
You must shut down all programs, even the browser after saving the Adobe unistall software to your desktop.
Go here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html?promoid=DTEGO
This will uninstall previous versions of Adobe flash player and clean the environment of any other files that need to be removed.
Once this is done you can now install the Adobe flash player. Go to:http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Good Luck!

JUST fixed this in IE8

at the bottom of the webpage double click on internet protection mode:off mine says

pop up box with settings

should be the world internet click on custom

look for launching application and unsafe programs click prompt

When you get a page where popup downloader is in use it should ask

I also did the click on ie8 and use as administrator but still had to alter the above

This had also fixed mozilla

it must run off ie somehow but it works there too let me know if you happy and it works!!
