no need to waste more money at TRONZ ELEC, here is how you get that Penn Drive working.
Windows thinks my "32 GB Kingston" USB penn drive has 32 GB of memory, and lets you format only to this maximum value it thinks is correct. However when I write more than 1 GB onto mine, the file names get nonsense, the content corrupt. So it has actually only about 1 GB of memory the rest is cheating.
I downloaded "mkdosfs" ( from here http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs ), which allows you to specify a number of blocks to format on the drive. My penn drive is H:, so I typed on a Windows cmd prompt:
mkdosfs -v -f 32 -n CLEAN1GB H: 2060000
it formats the drive in FAT32, with 2060000 blocks of 512K (which gives you 0.97 GB). I checked by filling up completely the newly formatted drive with files that all files are written correctly (using Total Commander/Synchronize/Check by content). After running this command, you should also check by yourself that files are correct until the drive is completely full, since your Penn Drive may have even less memory inside.
So for 6 Euro I finally got a 1 GB drive in China, which is always better than nothing at all...
greetings,

THERE IS NO WAY TO FIX UR 32 GB PENDRIVE.. i said i put in a 4 gb memory stick because the controller inside was supporting that.. and ppl.. DNT WASTE UR TIME ON SOFTWARE TO FIX IT.. cuz no matter what those software tell u, u will only get the memory depending upon what they ave put inside.. Reply to djrocks | 24 x_stp, on Dec 27, 2008 12:59:50 pm GMTThis one of your sentences is correct: "u will only get the memory depending upon what they ave put inside".
So since they have put 1 GB of memory into my so called "32 GB" Penn Drive, I just reformatted it in a correct manner in order to get a working 1 GB Penn Drive out of that thing (of course not a 32 GB Penn Drive). I used the command I gave you ( mkdosfs -v -f 32 -n CLEAN1GB H: 2060000 ). For me it works, I tested it by writing data and reading them back and comparing. You can also try it on your own.
Please activate your brain before writing things like "dnt make coments without knowing wt ur saying".

The problem with a Pen Drive formatted to 32 GB, which has only 1 GB of memory inside, is, that if by chance you try to write just a little bit more than 1 GB onto that thing you will corrupt your files. So with the way of formatting it to 1 GB, which I gave you, you can not write more than 1 GB on that thing, because it will show "no space left on device", which is better than corrupting your files.
Of course you are right, that there is a 32 GB controller inside. So if you have the missing memory you could somehow solder it onto the device to have a fully working 32 GB Penn Drive. I think to get it working up to 32 GB, you would need to remove the 1 GB which is inside and put new 32 GB chips inside. How much do you think those 32 GB chips would cost? Reply to x_stp |

| 32 sidd, on Jan 3, 2009 9:49:43 am GMTThanks mate...but i need to know something...even i hv a chinese 32 gb kingston pen drive...and only 200 mb seems to work...how do i know the exact fig. ? i mean it can be 230 anything... Reply to sidd | 43 x_stp, on Jan 8, 2009 4:24:02 pm GMTHi, guy! Just try to write onto the Penn Drive filling it up with say 250 pictures of say 1 MB in size. Compare with what you have written. If there are errors, then you have written too much, your actual memory is less than 250 MB. So try again with less pictures, until you get no read-back error. By using smaller files you can determine the limit more accurately if you absolutely wish. Reply to x_stp |

| 47 KPV, on Jan 16, 2009 4:52:48 am GMTPlease correct me if I am wrong. The command -f 32 did not work. Using -F 32 the disk formatted to 0.97 G.
Using h2testw showed that only 100MB was usable. I think that the wholependrive should be thrown away and not used. Costly lesson learnt. Reply to KPV |
