reducing the size of a word doc in macSolved/Closed

Question

Hello,  

I have a two page word doc, it has 1.4 mb. This can't be right, as it's only text ( my CV) with a small pic.  
How can I shrink the doc (so I can attach it to a job application on a website) ? 
Also the pdf file is way too big! 
I have a mac, OS 10.6  
Any help would be very much appreciated !
