You should do a Windows repair/install - see this site for instructions:

Hi Bro,
you have antivirus 2009. it is a roguespyware. Antivirus 2009 is an unwanted program, from the authors of Antivirus 2008 . These applications have resembling interface and "features". After stealth installation, Antivirus 2009 will show tonns of fake spyware\adware detection messages and offers to remove reported threats (after you purchase commercial version). But in real Antivirus 2009 is not a spyware cleaner, it's just an imitation of spyware remover. Antivirus 2009 can also slow your computer and cause system errors and crashes. Remove Antivirus 2009 using manual removal instructions (for advanced users) or removal tool.

use manual removal guide
http://remove-fake-antivirus2009.flesh9.com

ok one thing more, if you dont know how to remove antivirus 2009 using manual instruction than you should download and install SUPER ANTI SPYWARE to remove it.

You can still save your computer from a total system rebuild if you take it to a professional immediately. If they claim not to be able to save it, they're not a professional. Antivirus 2009 is bogus software. Once a professional saves your system, buy a REPUTABLE antivirus suite such as Norton (my personal favorite) or McAfee. If you don't want to pay for something, AVG Free is a servicable program. Otherwise, here's my advice: If you haven't heard of a particular program from a reputable source (PCMag, etc.) then it is safest to assume that its fake. For instance, I have never heard of SUPER ANTI SPYWARE in my ten years of being a computer professional. Your best bet is to steer clear. And see if you can get your credit card company to get the money back from when your bought Antivirus Pro 2009.

Trusting Norton and other low-ranked antivirus softwares is how many people get attacked by malware programs such as Antivirus 2009. Norton is also a huge resource hog, causing older or smaller PCs to stop functioning well. Use current reviews from reputable sources like PCMag or ZDNet, and you'll find a dozen or more anti-virus solutions ranked well above McAfee or Norton, including AVG Free and paid versions. The difference between paid antivirus solutions and free versions tends to be the additional anti-spyware solutions, excellent versions of which can be downloaded free from MalwareBytes and Spybot Search & Destroy.

And any professional worth his/her salt will do all this for you... but sometimes, a PC that's been infected for too long is not recoverable within a reasonable amount of time/money. In this case, data recovery may be your best option.

Although I agree with everything you say Abborath, the fact that you have never heard of super anti spyware makes me question whether or not you are computer professional. A very good program to deal with spyware is Malewarebytes Anti-malware. You can download it and some other useful things at http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Superantispyware is a reputable suite for malware removal.
As suggested, the fake XP Antivirus 2008/09 can be removed with Malwarebytes.
However, it is best to remove it in Safe Mode and with System Restore turned off.
The directions below will remove most any malware.
Download and updat malwarebytes.
You can get it free from www.malwarebytes.org
Prior to running Malwarebytes (or any other anti-virus/malware suite),
disable System Restore. Directions can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
If you are unable to view the above link follow these steps.
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
Click OK.
When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.

Once updated, reboot into Safe Mode (F8 at startup) and run a scan.
You should do this with your current antivirus product as well.
You may also need to download and run HiJackThis from
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
Once you run the utility save the log file.
You can post it for free analysis here or at
www.hijackthis.de
You are primarily looking for items marked with red X's.
You can get a brief overview of Hijackthis here:
http://www.merijn.org/htlogtutorial.php
If the above steps fail to remove the threat,
you may need to download and run Combofix.
The free download and directions can be located here.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
As noted in the directions, prior to running Combofix or any other anti-malware/anti-virus application please stop your anti-virus and anti-malware programs. Combofix should be saved to and run from your desktop.
You should rename the anti-malware suites to a different name prior to downloading as some threats can prevent them from running with their default names.

When you have finished running your scans and the threats have been removed enable System Restore.
Steps to turn on System Restore:
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
Click to clear the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
Click OK.
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.

There is also a trusted and free utility that shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. This is handy if you are receiving rundll errors or pop ups when you log on.
AutoRuns for Windows
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
If after running any of the suites above you find that your internet connection fails (is broken) please perform the following steps.
Restart your computer and test your internet connection.
If it does not work, then click Start ->Settings and Control Panel.
Select Network connections. Locate your connection and right click on it.
In the menu click the Repair option. When the repair proccess has finished, your connection should be working again. Reboot to test.

Antivirus Pro 2009 is a rogue anti-spyware program, no common antivirus programs (such as Norton AV, Kaspersky, NOD, etc.) will take care of it. Some anti-spyware programs, however, may do the trick.

You should try using Spyware Doctor or MalwareBytes' Antimalware. If that fails, go for the manual method, which is a lot more difficult, but can be the only way in many cases.

Spyware Doctor, manual removal guide:

After a bunch of googling from my iPhone I discovered that I could removed this antispyware pro 2009 trojan with malspyware. It seems to have worked, for I restarted my laptop and I don't get anymore popups or fake security threat warnings, but I still cannot connect to the internet, and the system in general is still running slightly slower than usual. Any advice?
