Hi there Holly,
If you are running OE or Outlook, check that you have the security setup correctly to allow the attachment downloads

In outlook 2007 you can find these settings under

Tools > Trust Centre

Windows Mail

Tools > Options > Security

OE express and Outlook 2003 I think have it in the same location as windows mail,
There should be a tick box that when ticked will stop the download and sending of attachments that could be a virus

good luck

Hello ninpomania,

I viewed your resolution you sent to Holly, however, I am not using Outlook. I log in directly to my hotmail/MSN email account and I am unable to open/download any attachments (i.e., PDF, Word). I was able to download/open these files before, but I can't figure out what the problem is now.

Please help!

I have the same problem with yahoo mail. What I did was went back to the classic yahoo mail and my open and download issues went away. As soon as I went back to Yahoo new-mail view the opening/downloading problems came back.

Im having the same problem. Im not using outlook. I sign in to msn hotmail account. When I click on the attachment, a window comes up showing that it is attempting to download - it says "Getting file information" and shows the little piece of paper flying from the globe to the file but nothing ever gets downloaded. And the space where it says "estimated time left:" is just blank.

Same thing when I sent an email to somebody with an attachment, they were not able to download it from me.

please if anybody can help.....thanks

I had the same problems with my yahoo mail--- the files are being transferred but the little papers just fly into the folder forever and ever! Did a system restore and that worked for any new mail that I received but not any saved mail- so I tried switching back to the "old" yahoo or yahoo classic and PRESTO-- everything works now.

Weird

I believe I have a solution to Yahoo email attachment download problem. Not long ago, Yahoo/AT&T did some merger changes. In that process, I noticed there was a new system for display. At the bottom of the email, there are options: slide show, download. Because the old system only required me to double click on the attachment above, that's what I continued to do. It worked. then one day it no longer worked all the time. When it didn't I had to go to the Classic Mail, a process I hated. Besides, I liked the new look. But that's what it took to download stubborn attachments.

I see many others have the same experience.

Today, I had the same prlblem. But I decided to click on the box by the pic at the bottom and choose the "download" button. It worked. I tried the old way on my next attachment, it didn't download. I clicked the boxes below, it worked.

So, my solution is to use the download system at the bottom of the email instead of clicking on the attachment directly. So far, in a very limited testing phase, it solved the problem.

Best of luck, y'all.

I am also not able to download attachments with yahoo mail. My problem seemed to start when I attempted to install IE8. Shortly after installing IE8, I found that I did not want to "screw around" with making it work (ie, re-establishing all of my options, etc). So, I backed it out and re-installed Yahoo 7. Did anybody else "dabble" in IE8?

I have been having the same issue and found that is related to my antivirus software. I was using bitdefender 2008 and had no issues. I switched to bitdefender antivirus 2009 and immediately lost the ability to download attachments. I reverted back to 2008 and problem was fixed.

Another thing to consider is new Anti-Phishing software.

if the issue is with the antivirus then you should not be able to download the attachments even from other browsers such as firefox or google chrome...but I was very able to download using other browsers except IE8...Im sure this is a issue with IE8 and microsoft would soon release a patch for it hopefully

I just downloaded BitDefender 2009 yesterday, having never used the product before. Now I am also not able to download ANY of my attachments. My other computer I do not have BitDefender 2009 on and I have NO problems so I KNOW it is not my Yahoo email account. I paid for a whole year. What am I supposed to do?!?! Is there something in that I can do with the settings?

My parents started having the exact same problem shortly after installing McAfee Security Center which includes McAfee SiteAdvisor. I went in and disabled SiteAdvisor and the problem went away immediately. So, that is a way you can stay in the new yahoo client.

It's probably ur internet anti virus thing blocking, a simple way to bypass this is set up a gmail account and forward ur attachments to there, or just switch ur esp. then u are able tto download all the attachments u will ever receive!!!

Also having same issue. At the moment we are using Intrenet explorer and cannot open any attachments in MSN/Hotmail. We are checking into the antivirus. Usually that is the number one reason why something is not working.

I'm using IE 8 with Vista and just loaded McAfee Security Center. Immediately had the problem of not being able to download attachments from webmail, specificaly my Gmail account. After spending over an hour with the support people there, issue still unresolved. After reading the post above, turned off Site Advisor and downloads immediately started working again. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello everyone,
I am a software engineer and hav noticed that this has become a major problem for IE8 users. All of these attachment problems have to do with your Add-ons. The best thing you can do is run IE 8 w/out add-ons. To do so click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Hope this helps some!

Go in and clear your browser cache by going to tool>internet options> and you will see a delete browser history button. Click that button and you will get another dialog box with multiple things that can be deleted like Cookies, Temporary Internet files, etc. Check all boxes and then hit the delete button. When done close the browser and open a new one. Your issue should be fixed for web downloading.
