Error 28 - Driver not installed

Iam running my pc on XP sp3. I recently purchased a external hard drive which I been told by both the manufacturer and my work colleages that it is a plug n play device and shouldnt need a driver. The pc should recognise it automatically.
Hence my problems start. I connected the drive via a usb port, the pc did show in the bottom r hand corner that new hardware had been detected. I checked this through selecting ''my computer but the drive wasnt there. The drive does however appear in the device manager but hsa error code 28 attached to it.
I had a simmialr problems when I tried to connect my card reader a while ago but unfortunately by a fluke I managed to sort it out but now cant remember how I did it. I have tried to follow some of the advice given in other forums but as Im a total newbie to all of this I soon became lost when trying some of the solutions.
The drive has been tested and works fine on other peoples pc's and is recognised automatically by them without any drivers being installed.
Can someone please advise/help and provide an idiots guide on how to resolve my problem without my paying a small fortune to get a proffessional to sort it for me.
Thanks in desperation.
