Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie to this site, and i want to say hi! Been looking for a forum
site about troubleshooting on computers and i seen this.
To make it short, i just bought a new hard drive for my Dell C800 Latitude.
It is a windows 2000 but thinking about upgrading it to XP.
My laptop got overloaded i guess since my cousin was using it playing games
and downloading a lot of stuff and it doesnt have to much gig on it.
It only has 80gb before but maybe because of downloading too much junk on it,
finally crashes. I dont have the installation OS cd, got lost from moving.
So i bought a new hard drive which is says compatible to this model that
has 160GB and a XP OS installation CD included. I seen this GUIDE on a certain
thread here and wondering if this is the right way to do for my kind of situation?
Any opinion from anyone?

Solution 3: New hard drive configuration

If you have just installed a new hard drive, you should insert the system installation CD and restart your computer again so that it reboots with the CD.

Sincerely

Configuration: Windows 2000
Internet Explorer 6
Dell Latitude C800
800mhz

1. remove the old hard drive
2. install the new drive
3. boot to the BIOS (DEL or F2 or F8)
4. change boot device order to CD drive first
5. Insert CD reboot and follow instructions

Hello xpcman,
I'm back and i tried to put the new hard drive and i tried to
boot and follow the F2 or F8 then it only stays on the utility press F2
keep on pressing it and stays the same.
Then the power turns off after a minute. It just turned off by itself.
Now i turned on the power, it just shows the green light on then it truned off
right away.
What did i do wrong?

I have the same issue with a Latitude C800, I need to replace a hard drive that has crashed. When I try to F2 into the BIOS screen the screen loads but none of the keystrokes which are supposed to migrate you through the BIOS are active (you'd think the keyboard was locked up...no response from the BIOS.) I can boot to a floppy and confirm at least partial keyboard operation by Ctrl-Alt-Del reboot while on the floppy AND F2 does launch the BIOS.

So, without access to the BIOS I can't change the boot order. Not to mention this laptop has a bad CD ROM (I'm going to swap it with a good one and hoping the laptop will boot from CD then and problem solved.) If not, I'm curious: Is it possible to boot from a USB to attempt a BIOS update in hopes of "unfreezing" the BIOS? The BIOS update I found on dell is larger than a floppy 1.44mb and that is only hoping it will run from a DOS boot.

I have to assume on a laptop with this BIOS level booting from USB was not a priority so I'm not sure that even if I was to get a USB fob configured properly that the laptop would respond to it.

Thanks.
