Hello, i recently had to do a system restore and after the process the user accounts were reset. Well, now all my media files, music, and docs in that my doc. folder are missing or hidden. I know that they're there, because when i check the storage diagram in the preferences menu for my hard drive it shows that the same amount of storage space is being used... if the files were all erased and gone then wouldn't there be more empty space. i use my computer for work and i had mostly media files on it mostly pics for art work, projects, such and such... there is really alot of art on my computer (about 60%) and i really need it so it's hard for me to just to let it go and reformat my harddrive... i don't know if it's hidden because of that user account being deleted or what, i can't find them anywhere, but i know there still there cause i can see the space still taken up and being used by those files when i look at how much storage is being used on my hardrive... i've done wildcard searches but the files don't even show up in those searches... even in DOS mode i couldn't find the files.... someone had mentioned on yahoo answers a hidden directory but i wouldn't know anything about how or where to begin with that... i run wondows xp media center.... um thinkin it's because of the user account being reset that this happened and now i can't find those files because i don't have previliges... ? or what ...? i don't know right now i've been workin on this for almost three and half weeks.... and no one else has got back with me from the other fourms... please help me i need that art work and some important work docs... aswell as my personel family pics from this summer that mean a lot to me...

well, if your using vista., u could try this..,

1. click on start menu

2. on the start search box type regedit and press enter

3. then on the regedit go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

4. on the right pane check if you can see the missing files or folders (under Name column) has the default %USERPROFILE% location (under Data column) for it.

5. right click on the missing files or folders and click modify

6. Type in the default location of the missing personal user folder, then click OK.

7. Close regedit.

8. Logoff and logon, or restart the computer to restore the folder.

Hi,
I am trying to follow your suggestion on locating missing documents after a system recovery.
I am using Windows ME and after a system recovery my docuemnts have been scattered around with most missing.
I think it's possible that I might find them in regedit as you said, but could you tell me what I should be looking for when accessing regeidt to find the missing documents?
I am looking under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, but not seeing any of my documents.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

I did a PC Restore on my Compaq because I was getting an error message "Run CHKDSK - C:/$MFT cannot be read". I had recently upgraded to Internet 7. I googled the error message and it told me to do a PC Restore. Afterwards I lost all my games I had purchased from Big Games and I lost all my pictures. I tryed the regedit and all but I still didn't get anything back. I am running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - Version 2002 - Service Pack 2.

Can you help me restore my games and pictures?

Thank-you

The same exact thing happened to me this past summer(2008) I had to buy a new laptop. But it you call dell or geek squad you can have them pull out the files and pictures. They can't take out the Itunes stuff though so that'll be lost if you dont have them on your Ipod or MP3 already. To have one of these people do it; it can cost you $50-$200 around possibly more they charge by the hour and supplies used. I hope this helps you with your problem. :)

I just did this, stayed up all night trying to fix this, any help would be greatly appreciated, I have a lot of personal files, and photos of my wife and family, means a lot to me,
I ran a system restore, and all my files are gone, but the space on the hard drive is still to where I left it,
It's the only little thing that is giving me hope to find the files,
If anyone know a way to get it to the way BEFORE the restore it would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you very much to everyone that's helped,
I did the regedit thing, it didn't do much, i'll still be looking online and posting anything that can help us find an answer.

If you have done a restore/ pc recovery on a compaq e-mail me. There is a reason your hard drive disk space remains the same and yes it is actually fairly easy to get all the files you had, im talking about pictures, mp3's, word, ect. it a simple process you need to preform in safe mode. Don't waist money on software, I have done this a few time while not thinking and have always found my files. putting them back where you want them can be a bit of a pain, but you wont loose them. Not sure what other computers this works on however its always worth a try.

Hello, I had the same problem. I lost all my documents/excel/pictures. I am so very upset and really would love to have your assistance. I have a compaq and am using windows xp home edition.

It seems like the systems crashed for many individuals.

Yesterday I contacted compaq and the women I talk to informed me to put in my disk and follow step by step.I specifically asked her if I could retrieve any of my stuff on the computer prior to completing this. She informed me everything would still be on the computer. NOT TRUE(not yelling at you).

I did this and when it was all completed my computer went back to factory reset. I never cried so hard as I lost pictures of my mom and her last visit to me.

My outlook express-all emails were gone, address book gone, however all the games I downloaded from gamehouse were still intact. Which I found strange.

I spent over nine hours on the computer yesterday and when I contacted compaq after all was said and done they did not help me at all.

It says to email you, I have no clue how I am to receive an email back from you. I will come back and check on here.

Kindest Regards,

Annette

Hi,

I am using compaq pressario laptop. OS got crasher then i asked for a system recovery DVD from them. I ran it without taking any backup of my drives. i thought it would just delete my C drive files, where OS is installed. But after running it I found that it brought the system to the factory setting. All the drives deleted , a single C drive & a recovery drive was formed.

I lost all my personal data which i have put in D drive.

Can i get my data back?
Please reply me

The option does not appear on most computers.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
**(just regular safe mode)**
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

hope this helps, there are some more destructive ways of getting into safe mode but this one works best

My son's Compaq Presario notebook is keeps going to the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen at power on automatically with no key presses at all, and none of the menu choices gets us back to Windows XP Home. It occasionally will boot properly, and when it last did, we cleaned and defragged the HD because there was <1% free space. There is now >10GB free. I get a "Invalid boot.ini Booting from c:\windows", but that happened even when XP was seemingly working. I'll try repairing boot.ini from the CD Recovery console, but can't see how that will help. I checked for stuck keys, too. Has anyoone experienced this before? I'm trying to avoid reinstalling from the CD and losing all his programs. Thanks.

How many hard drives or drive letters did you have?

did you introduce another hard drive to the system? If so I would remove it and see if it behaves.

if not try this...

Click --> START --> RUN

TYPE:
MSCONFIG

CLICK -->OK

CLICK on the: BOOT.INI (Tab)

Click the : [Check All Boot Paths] Button.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Boot.ini should look similar to this below...
---------------------------

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

--------------------------

Probably you have more than one line under [operating systems]. Leave only the one desired.
MSCONFIG might just fix it for you. if you follow the steps above..

If you want to hand edit it, let me know.

If not I may be able to help you with some software that searches for deleted files, even after a hard drive is formatted.

1. clone the disc to another Hard Drive.. not in windows but with a real boot level cloner.. (to be safe).

If its another user, they probably enabled (or you had) Encryption for his/your Profile and Personal Documents...

--> Restart:

In Windows XP Home Edition: You can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only.

In XP Professional: Press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen
and input your OLD USER NAME and Password
or
Administrator and the password

in the classic logon window.

You have to have to log into the Account Name and enter their/your Password to gain access to those files..
It doesn't a matter if you are an Admin account if you (or they) enabled encryption.

ANOTHER THING: IF THE ACCOUNT IS MISSING FROM LOGIN... (AFTER YOU CLONE YOUR DISK) LOGIN TO AN ADMIN ACCOUNT (YOURS, If it's one)... AND RE-CREATE THE (( SAME NAMED )) ACCOUNT THE SAME SETTINGS.
IN THEORY YOU SHOULD SEE THE LOGIN AT THE NEXT RESTART AND HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THE FILES YOU saw before but couldn't access..

There are programs out there that can gain access but i think if i suggest it, I may break a few rules..

good luck

IF YOU DID A WINDOWS RESTORE.. THE BEST THING IS TO DO:

1. TURN OFF THE COMPUTER ASAP!

2. Connect your (Windows) Hard Drive to another computer (via an adapter if its a laptop) and set it as a SLAVE in BIOS... so that the other system boots correctly into its own Windows..

3. Install "Get Data Back for NTFS" or "GET DATA BACK FOR FAT" whichever applies to the type of partion you have windows installed on. (NTFS is DEFAULT so try that first.) (BTW: I DONT WORK FOR THEM NOR GET PAID FOR THIS LOL, MAYBE I SHOULD hehe jk)

4. Now Scan Your (messed up) hard drive that is connected.

5. If you find what your looking for and it can recover it, you'll have to buy it I think.

The reason why I suggest this program is because its simple and it has worked for me in the past (compared to others..). There are better ones but they cost about $400 that recover deleted emails.. and MS docs, XL.. JPG... all that.. but you might as well try a data recovery company if you cant do it.. and are willing to spend that much.

Good Luck!

_Nick

I have done system restore, and lost my files. I did this once before and restored them after trying several times through restoring permissions in safe mode. I don't know what I did exactly that made my files reappear but now I have done it again. I can see the files and folders when I look in C:Documents and Settings/User Data but all the folders are empty and I cannot access the files. One time I looked in the back up folders I created, and I see the files in the folders, they are not empty but I still can't access the files. Because I didcreate a backup file, I could restore most of my missing data, but some of my videos and stuff are still not there. How do i get the stuff I see in the User Data folder into a usable format?

Hi,

I have recently restored my compaq and I can't access my original files. It has created a new user profile for me which is similar to my original user name. When I navigate to the original user directory in explorer and click on it I get a message ""C:\Documents and Settings\username" is not accessible. Access is denied. I am set up as an administrator, and my kids accounts are all user. It copied their accounts and I was able to access their files?? can you please help me!

"If you have done a restore/ pc recovery on a compaq e-mail me. Not sure what other computers this works on however its always worth a try."

I need help with this problem. I have a file recovery program, but as it restores the files, it's still recognizing the restored files as deleted ones in the file recovery.

¡JAM!

While surfing the net i came across ur message.

I am from India

Recently I did a system recovery as my system was having trouble starting up. It was going into a continuous loop and dint go to WINDOWS screen at all. So i did a system recovery by prsesing F10 thinking it will restore to my original state and i lost all my files.

Now i cannot see my old files or folders. Especially my excel files.

How do i get back my files before my recovery

RECOVERY and RESTORE are two different things.

I couldnt restore becoz the computere was not booting properly and windows dnit open for me to use my mous. The only option i had was to press F10 and do a recovery and thereafter its like a clean slate, all my files of the last four years are missing.

Please help.

Hi, I've lost access to my files (music, pictures, documents) due to a Windows profile corrupting. Unfortunately I deleted the Windows profile and tried to create a different profile using the same name to see if I could access the files again. It didn't work, but I think my files are still on my hard disk because the available space has not changed. Any possible help on being able to get them back again would be appreciated. DJ Smurf, you are the best thanks for your kindness in posting how this can be done...I did what you suggested and got every document , pic , song and video back....i so appreciate your help....

Imagine this was was caused by a Compaq/HP tech support personnel in india who I gave permission for a remote acess to my pc to fix my cd drive and the idiot did a system restore...and promised to call back and never did.....than they said sorry they cannot help me... that there is no way I can get back my stuff....and they are Compaq/HP tech support in india, who had a hard time understanding me I spoke to at least 7 ppl and 3 supervisors...........They refused to refund my money after not fixing my cd drive and losing my stuff...so I placed a stop payment...curses to them

Can you please let me know if there is a way for me to recover my emails? I found 3 .pst files via a search but not sure if this is it and how to export to oulook...please respond back on the forum is case someone else need the info...thanks

Hey Mr DJ Smurf,

I see you are a clever person. Hence I am contacting you about a similar problem. I am running Win XP Home edition. I have recently received my Compaq HD from the shop after it crashed with a HDD problem. From the shop we were able to source my old files. 3 days after receiving it back it crashed again. I have since reinstalled it after downloading a HDD drive off the internet and reinstalled and ran a system recovery and lost my old files.

I'm hoping you can send me some hope with your reply regarding recovering the original lost files?

I joined up this forum although I'm not a geek, I think I'm pretty much on my way?

Hello, i recently had to do a system restore and after the process the user accounts were reset. Well, now all my media files, music, and docs in that my doc. folder are missing or hidden. I know that they're there, because when i check the storage diagram in the preferences menu for my hard drive it shows that the same amount of storage space is being used... if the files were all erased and gone then wouldn't there be more empty space. i use my computer for work and i had mostly media files on it mostly pics for art work, projects, such and such... there is really alot of art on my computer (about 60%) and i really need it so it's hard for me to just to let it go and reformat my harddrive... i don't know if it's hidden because of that user account being deleted or what, i can't find them anywhere, but i know there still there cause i can see the space still taken up and being used by those files when i look at how much storage is being used on my hardrive.... PLEASE HELP !!
I m using HP Pavilian desktop (AMD) XP media center

On the forum it says to e-mail you for help ;) A company did a system restore, they had backed up my info, so I somehow still have pictures, music...but no Word documents and this is of course of most importance to me. Any suggestions. He did run a program to find lost data and it didn't come up with much green area. Does this mean the restore might have written over these files all together. Or could they still be there somewhere??!! I just wanted a second opinion ;) Thank you so much for your help! Jen

Hi:

I had to do a PC recovery to get my computer to work. I had everything under my name and when the computer did it's recovery, it gave me a new user account. I went under explore all users and saw my old account and clicked on it and have been able to find a few things there. However why won't it show me that user in all users so I can change back to my old user and two all my programs were under the old user and how my stuff will not open because it says ( ie word) is not an appl for this user. Can I recover my old programs and move thm over to my new user ? or is it lost?

I also had a Microsoft works calendar that is very important to me.. it goes back seven years... can I recover that because now my new calendar for this user is blank.

Hello,

You responded to somebody's problem on this forum: http://en.kioskea.net/... in February 2009. Hopefully you can help me out. I did a system restore on Windows XP and lost all of my documents. I had well over 90 GB worth of pics, videos and music. My hard drive now shows that I only have a little over 1 GB. I followed the Safe Mode instructions posted by you in the forum but still nothing.

Any thoughts as to how I can get my documents back? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Chris

Hi,

I really need your help. A few a days ago , I installed a Kaspersky internet security on my computer and performed a computer scan on the 12th of Aug. Well the next day I turned on my computer and noticed that the desktop had gone back to the factory setting ( I have a Compag computer with Windows XP Media Center 2005) and all my files, pictures , word documents have disappeared.

I then performed a Pc recovery, but it remmained the same nothing came back. I then saw your advise on " How to restore after a PC Recovery" and tried it out but it didn't work as I had access to all my user folders.

I don't know what else to do!!!! Please, please help!!!

I am 8 & 1/2 months pregnant and really stressed out, I had saved a lot of importatnt documents and pictures on my computer and I really need to get them back.

I hope to hear from you soon. Thanking you in advance.

Dj Smurf...first off thanks for your posts, I'm glad the Google lead me here first! I have a Compaq, did a system restore and lost all my pics and iTunes library (among other things I'm sure). Howeverm the most important are the pictures. You mentioned a specific process that works easily on a Compaq, can you please provide me with the steps specific to that machine that will recover my lost pictures?? I thank you profusely for your time!

Okay so it seems that you are great at helping others and I'm praying that you can help me also. My mother had a pasword on her computer and I have been able to bypass passwords before but her's is a HP Vista and I was on an XP. So I did something when I restarted the computer hit Esc and then F10 but nothing I tried worked. So I started her computer over and it said something like NTDLR is missing hit any key to restart. Well it wouldn't work so I held down the power button and started it over I got it to the system restore page and I clicked that because it has worked before only this time it didnt. It said on the title bar like Recovery manager, it said it would not delete anything. so I did it only much to my surprise it cleared EVERYTHING and my mom found out and is really mad all out pics doc my great gramma's life story, stuff with taxes stuff for my moms work. I took my moms computer to Geek Squad and they told me it would cost about 1,200 and its no guarantee. so I'm praying that you can help me! when you look on the C drive it has like 248 G free out of 280 or somthing like that but when you look at the D drive it only has 2 G free from 12.8. Does any of this make sense! I really hope you can help me! You can write me back at mekah2000@hotmail.com Thanks demii.

Hi,

Saw your message on kioskea and want to find my files after a system restore. I had to restore it after it had a system32/config error. When I inserted the restore disk, it said I would keep my old files, but software and updates would be missing. Is it just a case that I need to restore to a previous date? I have a Compaq Presario laptop.

Give this a try, i recomend printing this before moving your computer into safe mode.

1. Shut down the computer.

2. Turn the power on, and when the blue HP or Compaq screen appears, press F8 to display the Windows Advanced Options Menu .

3.Use the arrow keys to move up to Safe Mode and press Enter .

4.Press Enter on Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition .

5.Click Administrator and, enter your password or press Enter .

6.A window will appear to prompt for confirmation to keep operating in Safe Mode .

7.Click Yes .

8.Click Start and My Computer . Then, double-click the main hard drive ( C: ) and Documents and Settings .

9.Right-click the folder name of the user account and click Properties . (This will be a folder that shows up when you are normally logged into windows, under my documents however windows shows it as empty and does not allow you at access it.)

10.Click Security .

11.Click Advanced . On the Owner tab,(third tab over) click the checkbox to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects option.

12. Click Apply .

13.Click Yes to the security message.

14.Click OK .

15.Click OK again.(you should start to see the files being transferred that your trying to access)

Restart your computer and access the folder in normal operation, you should be able to access all the lost documents on your desktop, my pictures, my music, my movies, my documents, your internet favorites ect.

This should work you will get your lost docs. back however you may still need to reinstall some progams that you lost. Moving your files back to your new desktop can be another interesting issue, however you should for now have all your lost info recovered. Feel free to e-mail with any questions or if you need more help, just be sure to include your e-mail so I can get a message back to you.

But...
When I click "Start" "My Documents" Nothing is there...why???
Then when I go to "Windows Movie Maker" it can't find the video files.

I'm so frustrated with HP tech support right now.

I should have been more clear on this sorry, once you complet the process in safe mode and restart your computer, the file can be accessed however to do this you must.

--""Before you complete the process""

Click START

Click MY Computer

Click C:

Click DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

--mouse over all the user in this folder, the one that shows empty, and once clicked on does not give you premission to open is the folder you want to use when completing the process. This should be the user (user name) you had before the restore, is may have a .PC(with numbers behind it)

""After the process, and restart in normal windows""

click START

click MY COMPUTER

click C:

click DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

--- at this point you should see all the users folders again, however when you click on the user folder you used the process on that folder will now open.

--From here you need to move your files back to your currently operating user name, you should see all of your desktop, my music, my pics, my movies, however until you move these files from the old user to your current user the computer will not always find them in your basic progams(ie.--windows movie maker, media player)

--with some of the folders it may be easier to move them first to a desktop folder and then reorganise them from there.

Let me know if this helps

And just to add a bit after reading your post again, the admin is not where you want to copy and past your files. The user name that you created when you preformed the restore is where they need to be.

If you have trouble finding this user try this.

make a new folder on your desktop and name it "BINGO", open that folder and create a folder named "FOUND IT"

click START

click MY COMPUTER

click C:

click DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

--from here go to any user that does not contain adminstrator, or all users in the file name

--once you open each user

click DESKTOP

--look through the desktop folder, your looking for the folder BINGO open that and you should see the folder FOUND IT, this is the user that you want to copy all your lost files from the old user to.

Any ideas what steps I can take to get into it.

Neither administrator or main user (who is an administrator) have any passwords.

HI djsmurf,

I have a DELL laptop operating with Vista. I have an issue. I spoke to Dell support who said that Microsoft has been pushing some large updates that are causing major issues. At first they thought my hard drive crashed, but were able to complete a system restore so I can at least get back the slate gray error screen.

My question is I have lost TONS of pictures (already bought a external hard drive to avoid this situation in the future), but I need to retrieve the photos. Will completing your safe mode directions work for my situation? Will it work on a Dell computer?

I am sure that Geek Squad can recover my photos, but don't want to pay $200+, unless I have to. Do I have any other option to recover my photos?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you!

I accidentally pushed the power button on my computer and it started running the safe mode page...but wouldn't let me go into safe mode, it would only let me do hp recovery...which I did and the computer is fine but I lost everything...pictures of my family, documents and music. I am using a Microsoft Windows XP (media center edition, server pack 2...I don't know if this helps), is there a way for me to restore all my pictures, music and documents? I thought I should also mention that it's a HP pavillion and that when I go into My Computer I have two hard disk drives, HP PAVILLION (C:) and HP_RECOVERY(D:). If you do know a way and want my email reply back asking for it and I will give it to you.

Strange, I know. You should of head the run around with HP. He finally told me to re-install my office and that it would restore all my files. Ha!

OK,
I think I've got everything back now. I moved the files from HP_Administrator to HP_Administrator.Home. I didn't realize I was setting up a new user account. Was there a way to just go back to the one I had originally?

Now what do I do with all these extra user accounts? Can they be deleted? My computer just comes up automatically with no password. I never have to click on anything (like choose a user).

Probably another topic...
My computer takes FOREVER to start up now. Any suggestions?

Ya I know the run around those guys can give you, and most of the time people don't realize their making a new account. I don't know of a way of restoring an old user account to where it functions, your os files are all placed in the new account when you do the pc recovery.

You can change your user account setting so you have a password when you login, if you need help with that just let me know.

really dig through all of your files and put them on a DVD or external hard disk to insure you have a back-up of them all.

You can preform a disk clean-up, and defragment your drive as after the recovery it leaves a mess of files, this should help with the start up speed.

Feel free to message me if you need any further help, glad you got most of your lost files back

I am using a Microsoft Windows XP (media center edition, server pack 2...I don't know if this helps), is there a way for me to restore all my pictures, music and documents? I thought I should also mention that it's a HP pavillion (a1130n). If you do know a way and want my email to tell me reply back to this an I will add it.
Your input is appreciated, Thank you!

I had the same problem. My system would say i had the same amount of space taken up but i couldn't find the files no matter what i did. My friend told me not to do a the SCAN Disk deal because it would probably delete the files permanently. So I just took it to some guys http://www.epicdatarecovery.com here in my area and they backed up everything form me on another drive. I had all my stuff on there and noooo backup. Now I backup every week!

Vlu,
I wouldn't use the computer or the SPARE where you lost the files on. I would get another computer or your friend's and download this program "Get Data Back for NTFS" or "GETDATABACK for FAT"

There website is:
http://www.runtime.org/

Download the free trial and see if it finds the pictures you lost, if it does i think you have to buy it to recover them.

But since you didn't drop it or physically break it I, software may be your savior, other then sending it to a real data recovery company... http://www.EpicDataRecovery.com

If you don't know how to connect your internal hard drive to another computer or Laptop, I would suggest you try this your self.... If you have a Techie friend maybe they can help.

DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE 2 HARD DRIVES THAT YOU LOST THE FILES ON. IF YOU INSTALL ANYTHING OR USE THE COMPUTER OR SPARE, YOU MIGHT RECORD OVER THE FILES YOU LOST AND YOU WILL LOSS THEM FOREVER!

Good Luck!

I used the process detailed above by dj smurf, on Saturday January 10, 2009 05:30:40 PM.

IT WORKED!!!! Thank you DJ, saved a lot of important files for me. They are recovered in a "dump" and you may need to do a search using modified on this date to find them, but they will be there in the documents and settings folder!!!
