Ok so the first thing to check is whether your audio driver is actually working. Do you get any sound at all? This might be due to the wrong configuration of your driver or incompatibility with the os/ service pack that you have. I would suggest that you uninstall and install the audio driver again. Be careful not to download any spyware or malware while doing so.

Also, check whether the Master Volume is not set to mute all. You can make sure that it works by selecting your audio options in the control panel. Now that you have checked this, ensure that the speaker are properly plugged in and that they are on... I know this might seem stupid but it does happen sometimes when the focus is turned to a deeper issue with the computer.

Good luck

Look kid, I know why they won't work.
If you've hooked them up on your own, ask the brand dude for the real instructions.
Now bye!
P.S. DO AS THE INST5RUCTIONS SAY!
Got it?

Oh my goodness! Thank You So So much! I was dusting my computer and computer desk, once I was done, I went to my music and I couldn't hear anything. I restarted my computer several times thinking that something went wrong while I was dusting. While doing that I also tried replugging the speakers back in and everything. I looked at the audio manager and everything said it was fine, it was turned up but I couldn't hear anything. Once i read the "master volume" part, i noticed another speaker symbol at the bottom of my computer...turned out it was on mute, how? I don't know but if it weren't for that I would have probably gone and bought new speakers.

Thank you

Ok, so mine are doing that too. For some reison they will start and stop when a new song changes on my windows media player. I think that mabey the wire that attaches the laptop to the speekers, may be loose or a defect. I'm looking for they help line # that came with my laptop. I would understand why this would be happening with an older compaq, but, I got mine about 2 weeks ago for an early christmas present. Once I contact them, Ill let you know why this is happening after I plug head phones in.

I have the same problem - caused by an upgrade from XP SP2 to SP3. It is recognised in a couple of forums, but I have not found a single answer that is both intelligble to the novice and works. Undortunately - this suggested solution only answered one of the needs - it was intelligible ... but didn't work. The internal speakers on my computer don't work - although external ones do.

Since this post, I found the solution - which with modification will probably help others.
On my Lenovo computer I

1. Updated the BIOS using downlaods from the Lenovo site
2. Reinstalled the Realtek Audio driver from the Lenovo site
3. Went into the Realtek driver folder & ran the Realtek AdDrvLdr program
4. Rebooted .. and ..
5. voila! all was fixed

What is your operating system? When you say you don't have windows audio - do you mean in the control panel? If so, try switching to classic view.

Sounds like you should back up your computer - especially the data & files - and then re-install winddows & all the updates & then all your programs one at a time

I've had a similar problem, but a bit stranger. About a week ago, i installed a game and everything had been going well. Just a couple days ago though, the sound on my computer speakers won't work. They are plugged in correctly and everything, i even tried them on another pc and they work fine. When i go on Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices Properties ... It says: No Audio Device. After clicking on the Audio Tab, it shows that my default device is: "Modem #0 Line Playback". The other device is: "SB Live! wave device". The SB Live device comes up correctly, but still no sound. And i know that the Modem #0 device is suppose to be the correct device for the speakers. Now, the strange thing about this is, the video game that i had installed has sound. But it is the only game that has it, and nothing else on the computer has sound. Please help, thanks.

I only was able to fix the internal speakers. the external speakers were always OK. See reply 6 to see what I did.
Try reinstalling windows and all the drivers.
I cant offer any more. I will not be following this thread any more.

Hello
I am using an HP dv6-1011ax running Vista 32bit.
However, when I installed SP2 on my computer, my speakers won't "speak".
I tried to troubleshoot the problem, I went to the Control Panel, opened Sound and tried to test the speakers. When I tried to do this, an error message came up saying "Failed to play test tone".
Does anybody else have a similar problem on Vista?
Thanks :)

There are a few things you can try:

1. check you got the cables in the right places

2. make sure you didnt mute volume

3. check if the speakers are bad

4. Ask operating ppl

5. check on computer for (audio recognition) or something device, see if recognises speakers.
- if doesn't, it's probably either plugged in wrong slot or speakers bad quality
- if does, then the speakers are working, it's just that you maybe muted something.

REMEMBER: Check the most obvious things first, don't check the harder things first. because most places you look for things are in the places where they will be difficult to find. People don't generally look in the most obvious places first.

How do you know if your speakers do not work? I have a 4-speaker system with a subwoofer and just upgrade my computer from a XP system to one running Windows Vista. I suspect it's either the subwoofer or the speakers, because even before the computer upgrade, I had a problem with the sound. Plus audio is fine with headphones.

Yo guys. Kay so. I'm having issues with my speakers as well. They've been very handy the last 5 years. Never had a problem, ever. Even when I had to reformat or w/e my whole computer. I had to do so again so very recently. Today I just tried playing some music and my computer told me there was no sound device. So I replugged in my speakers and checked for a mute thing. I went to control panel, went to everything having the words "sound, device, speakers" anything like that. All of them told me basically the same thing. I have nothing on my computer that supports my speakers. I don't get it. What's wrong with my computer? Being 15 and having almost no computer skills sucks. Help me? Do I need to get some type of installation CD? I had a computer techie fix mine. He wouldn't have missed this. I want to figure out what's wrong before I go back to him for help.
