Hello, just read your reply and my PC is exactly the same and have to typr in explorer.exe to start up desktop. Is there a specific reason for this and how would I need to rectify the problem, would I need to re-load or repair Windows using disc as I dont want to lose all my pictures stored. Thanks :)

Under XP, you may be looking for the "Processes" tab, then look for "Explorer.exe" to see if it's running or not. In my case, it's not, so I'm stuck with going to the File Menu and "New Task (Run)" is the first item in the list.

Select that, enter "explorer" or "explorer.exe" and it should load your desktop...in my case, it did exactly that! Then it crashed, reloaded Explorer...crashed, reloaded, crashed...and I shut the (*&@#ing thing down from task manager. :(

NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL at the moment.

Hi

Ya there is a small solution to get back desktop at the start up. You can go to control panel then users account. Make a new user and delete the old user and switch off for guest user. Before you delete the old user please take back up of your desktop Icons. once you creat the new user just log on by new user and past the all desktop I cons in the new users desktop. Now if you restart your PC then you can sure see the desktop icons at the start up.

If you can not do that easily then please send me email directly firozmahmud58@yahoo.com / firoz@latitudesystems.com.

I will be touch with you soon to do even by remotely.

Thanks
Firoz Mahmud

Heya,
i'm having gthe same problem...
windows downloaded & installed a new update, it froze in the process of restarting though,
now it will let me get into 1 profile, but it only loads the desktop image, no icons, toolbar etc, I pull up the task manager and i can't get it to load explorer or any program, doesn't give me an error, runs the hourglass for a few moments and then nothing...
this has been happening to me on & off for over a year now, every few months, windows updates & my compt scfews up like this.
I even went so far as a few weeks ago I totally repartioned & reformatted my hard drivces..
now all of a sudden the same bloody thing happens..
i've been bouncing back a few restore points but so far no luck...
what is going on with microsoft updates? anyone have any idea whatsoever??
i've had avg the entire time, constantly updating its files etc & nothing is ever found...

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FEW WEEKS AGO AND TIS IS WHAT I DID. 1. RUN IN SAFE MODE. 2. CLICK START MENU. GOTO ALL PROGRAMS THEN ACCESSORIES THEN SYSTEM TOOLS THEN CLICK SYSTEM RESTORE

THIS WILL, AS THE NAME IMPLIES, RESTORE UR SYSTEM ON A SPECIFIED DATE. BETTER REMEMBER THE DATE U HAD THE PROBLEM OCCURS.

OPEN IT AND ITS EASY TO FOLLOW.

THIS WORKS FOR ME.

I apparrently developed this problem myself...while I was at a funeral.

When I left the system was running just fine, but when I came back, and the system was sitting there with nothing but the background image displayed, OBVIOUSLY something wrong, so I rebooted.

System boots normally, "appears" to load explorer, then the second I move the mouse BLAM! All the icons disappear, as well as the start button, bar, etc.

I give it the three-button-salute, run a new copy of explorer.exe since it doesn't appear in the task list, and from that point forward, explorer loads, crashes, loads, crashes, loads...mildly annoying.

Since I've only got one account on that machine, there's no admin account to work with, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do...never seen this before!

Interesting that even running extra copies of Explorer doesn't help, since if you click on ANY icon, BLAM! Crash and restart explorer...if you load anything from the menu, BLAM! It restarts explorer again.

Maybe I'll have to replace explorer.exe?!

first of all i install xp(sp-2) without any derivers then antivirus and update it : find lots of viruses in my pc witch blocks window explorer files..... so now in these days my pc running smooyhly.... hope u understand.... if this is wrong then email me..... thanks

Using System restore

Open Task Manager by typing Alt+Ctrl+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc

Click on File>New Task (Run)

Type ”%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe” without quotes

It will open the sysytem restore window for you.

Then restore your computer to an earlier time when the computer was not going with this problem.

You have done.
