As soon as i remove the harddisk, it boots properly.I have also tried formatting the hard disk by connecting to another machine and the hard disk is perfectly ok,also the BIOS detects the hard disk. please help.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.3

I'm trying to add an IDE slave hard drive to a computer that has a SATA drive for the primary drive. A friend of mine told me to add the second drive to the CD Rom drive cable and make them both cable select. Is that correct???

Thanks

You dont need sata drivers. go to the bios and there is a SATA [ enable] and you turn that on [disable] and that's it. put CD windows XP in your drive and boot your machine from CD and that's it. All you need to know i s how to install Windows XP (follow the instructions)
hope this help you

If you have a cd rom on an ide socket, then you cannot add a hd to the same socket as a master or slave. THis is due to the drive using different connection speeds.

WRONG! I have an IDE set up currently consisting of a CD/DVD RW Multi-drive and an 80GB IDE HDD. The multi-drive is configured as MASTER and the HDD is configured as SLAVE. This set-up works absolutely fine. I shall shortly be adding a 500Gb SATA drive. However, not sure how I'm going to do this yet :-S

I'm thinking keep the IDE as the main drive (ie. running XP) with the SATA drive used for pure storage. Is this the optimum way to do it???

Some of the older motherboards only support Sata I so you might need to set the jumpers up on a Sata II drive to go into a Sata I mode.

Hi guys. I think your ideas wont work. The only thing for formatting SATA HDD is to take a floppy rom and insert in your laptops (for PC u dont need because they have integrated) then find the SATA drives in internet, download them, put in a floppy disc and start formatting. If u dont know how to do it search on net u will find it step by step.

You are all insane! gparted. It will give you a graphical overview of your drives. What does fdixk -l do? does it show your new drive there? The reason you wouldnt see a new drive is because THERE IS NO PARTITION ON IT!!! Use a partitioning program of some sort to fix it. Then, if it won't automount (which it probably won't) you will have to learn how to use the mount command.

mount -t <fstype> /dev/<whatever your drive is> /<some folder somewhere>

Want ideas on where your other drives are, take a look at your fstab file. I have a computer with 4 drives in it. I use to have SATA and IDE, but I switched all over to SATA. If you cannot figure this out, there are man pages for all this stuff too. But basically, you need a partition on the drive with some sort of filesystem.

The hard drive not being partitioned will still get recognized by the bios and the OS.
I t might however have to be formatted at least.
Anyway Have you tried to down load all the latest drivers for the Sony website. I
Had to do this because my cd/dvd drive was not getting recognized. I had it packed away for about oh a
few years. when i turned it on the apps were all sluggish. I thought it was just me getting so use to things running so smoothly on my desktop. oh and you update the bios or any drivers or software turn off your screen saver and even you air conditioner, power surging isn t good. well thats my .02.
