2nd SATA Hard Drive not shown on my computer

Hello,

I have had a WD 160GB SATA hard drive as my primary HD and I recently bought a Seagate 80GB SATA hard drive to use as a secondary storage space. I connected all the power, SATA cables correctly and when I boot my comp, it shows on the display that my WD 160GB is the primary and Seagate 80GB is the slave. However, when I go on to my comptuer, I don't see the new hard drive. When I check the device manager, it still indicates that it recognizes both of my hard drives. Why is it not showing up on my computer to be used?

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

You need to format the drive before you can use it for data.

Right-Click on the “My Computer” icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select “Manage.”

A new window titled “Computer Management” comes up.
Select “Storage” from the left hand side by clicking it once, then select “Disk Management(local)” from the right side by double-clicking it. Find your new drive and format it with one large partition.

DONT USE ANY CHKDSK OR SCANDSK... they will erase the data on it while thinking they are fixing it.

DONT TURN IT ON. (If it failed do to a "Head Crash" and you keep it on or keep turning it on/off you'll kill it for good!)

DONT INSTALL ANYTHING ON THE DRIVE THAT FAILED. (It will write-over everything like recording over a Tape).

DONT TRUST RETAIL DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE AS A FIX ALL...
Some of them might show you a list of files that they claim they can recover, but when you buy the registration Key to Recover your Data... the program Recovers random areas of the Disk (Garbage) and names the (fake recovered) files after the files that you lost... once you try to open them you realize that the program didn't recover anything.
It just looked like it did or could before you bought it. Anyone can get the Deleted file list... recovering them is a whole other ballgame.

If you know what you're doing.... And you're shure its not a "Head Crash"... Hook up the Hard Drive to another computer and try some of the Data Reocvery software that allows you to recover 1 or 2 files to see if it works
before y ou buy it... (even then its still not definete if it will recover everything).

If you dont know what you're doing and dont have the gear... save your Time, Money and Stress.. and bring it to the
Pros... I brought my 1TB External Drive to these guys and they got files back even after a fall down 2 flights of stairs lol.

Hi
I have a IDE 80 GB HDD already attached. I bought a new 160 GB SATA HDD. But the new SATA is not detecting, even in the BIOS. But I connected the SATA to another computer whihc is having SATA as primary, it is detecting there. I am suspecting issues with my BIOS settings as the hard disk os brand new. Please suggest a way out.

This could be a BIOS problem. You might have the SATA ports disabled in the BIOS. Boot into the BIOS ( Del or F2 or F10 or F12 depending on the computer make) :
1. check to see if the SATA drive is listed as a found drive (I know you said it wasn't)
2. check the advanced settings to see if SATA support is enabled (or Automatic)

If you don't see the drive something is defective:
1. no power to the drive
2. cable or plug defective
3. SATA port disabled in the BIOS
4. defective drive

Try the drive in
1. another SATA port
2. another computer

I hope this helps - Good Luck

Hi,

I have a similar problem that the slave drive is not showing in My Computer.

However the salve drive is from a failed RAID NAS server so I do not want to format the drive - since I'm trying to recover the data from the drive.

Any idea?

Quick (dumb) question, but i want to be sure. Found this thread which seems to answer my problem nicely. HOWEVER, how exactly do i format the disk from "Disc management"? Right now there is only the option to "Partition" is this what I want to do, and if so, it asks "primary" or "extended". Which do I want to do. It is for a 2nd HDD which does not contain OS if that matters.

Thanks!!

First you partition - do a primary partition if you want only one partition on the hard drive. Then you format the partition - again right click and select format use NTSF - use default allocation size and give the new volume a lable (on spaces allowed in the name).

Finally became smart and reworded my google search "installing second sata hard drive without raid" and this was the first link that google came up with. Worked perfectly. Thank you very much.

Hi,

All good advice, but when installing a extra drive it will not show up in windows.
my advice is to follow the link and download the software on the site of the harddrive manufactuer;
Such as this link to Western Digital drives site, this will show the drive and format also (may work for other drives)
I have vista and had to set up the install programme in compatibility= right click on install programme / select properties / compatibility / tick box -- run this program in compatibility mode -- I chose win 2000 then applied . start install program etc.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=602&lang=en

Hope this helps some.

I also have a problem with a WD 1TB SATA drive. However mine isn't even being detected when I go into Windows, when I disable in the BIOS, my PC boots. But its when its enabled, I get an error - auto-sensing slave hard disk drive, strike F1 to continue or F2 to change settings.

I am going to try and install Windows on this drive, but I fear it may be gubbed :(

I bought a western digital internal HD 1TB, i put it in my computer, and it would show up in Computer managment >storage > disk managment

But it wouldnt show up in My Computer.

i downloaded Data LifeGuard from the western digital website but i have vista so it didnt work very well, but i followed these tips and everything worked thanks so much

Right click and properties>compatibility.

after i used this programe it seemed to have worked straight away. I perviously used Computer managment to format the new internal HD but that did nothing.

this programe did the trick> http://support.wdc.com/download/dlg/dlgsetup11_win.zip but that was for my model

so use the other part of the link to find what you might need or perhaps there is some other software you can use if you have a different brand. try their website perhaps.

thanks a lot to the person who posted this!

Hard drive missing, on Jul 25, 2009 3:28:32 am BST

This is a bit tougher than changing letter drive.

I was running winXP on a master drive and kept all my content on a slave drive (all SATA, all NTFS). Installed Vista 64bit on a new system and transfered my slave drive over with all its content. Drive did not show up in the Vista. Brought the slave hard drive back to the old WinXP software and set it up in the same configuration as when it was working. Now the hard drive will not show up in my computer.

Shows up in Device manager
Shows up in computer management but has a red x on Disk 1, states unreadable.

Now of course i could format it and that would fix the issue, BUT it's not an option as i need the content on it.

Any idea anyone?
