Alright, so the epic story of my jacked up computer:

At 3AM one morning I head my computer come on - which it's done before, usually caused by a cat, so I wasn't worried - so I get up, open it up and the screen is completely blank. I restart it, not really thinking much about it, but just wanting to check and make sure it's OK, and it gets to the little Windows is Loading part, but when it's supposed to go to my log-in screen, it just comes up blank.

I restart it again and go into safe mode, where it tells me that I should probably try a system restore because probably something that was installed went wrong. Ok, sure, I system restore back to 3AM, and when it restarts I log in (with much anxiety) and it tells me that it's done the system restore and I should go look for what caused the problem. I get to the installations page and it tells me that Vista does automatic updates at 3AM, I deduce from this that whatever went horribly wrong probably happened at 3AM and that system restoring back to then is probably not the best idea. So I system restore again back to about a week earlier where everything was working fine.

That's worked with some minor issues for the last couple of days. It'll still get to where the log-in screen should be and go completely blank, so I start tapping the enter key and clicking around and sometimes it'll come back up and I can log on and everything is fine.

This morning, it all went to pot again, I got to the log-in screen but it wouldn't go past the little Windows Welcome screen. I attempt the 'tap the enter key to make it work' approach but it just makes very upset noises at me and I restart it. Then the log in page won't come up again. So I restart again and it says it wants to check the start-up thingy - Ok, have at it. It doesn't come up with anything; I restart and try logging in normally. After much huffing, puffing, restarting and enter tapping, I've managed to get back onto my computer.

The obvious question: why is this happening? Is there any way that I can fix it without having to send it back to the manufacturer? I just bought it this March, so it's not even a year old yet and should probably still be under warranty. BUT. I'm in Germany right now. I'm studying abroad for a year and I really don't want to ship it back to the United States.

Other details: I didn't have internet up until yesterday, so it was trying to do updates with out internet - bad?
On my Local Disc (C:) I have 60% of my space still free - 91.3GB out of 137GB
On PRESARIO_RP (D:) I have 1.86GB of 11.8GB free (10%) - it came like that.
It's a Compaq Presario V6719NR Notebook. It's from Compaq but it uses HP stuff - I don't really know...

But anyway - any help would be OHSOVERY appreciated.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 3.0.2

First thing is to turn OFF automatic updates. You go to the tray on the lower right and click on the Security Center shield icon. Change the automatic update to "let me choose" and then "check for updates and let me choose ..." . Microsoft will continue to try to apply the update(s) that is causing your problems.

The first thing I would do is a general clean-up of Windows - I use a free program called Advanced WindowsCare it can be found at this link www.iobit.com. Download and install this program - start it and allow it to clean everything (except
un-check privacy sweep - that will keep you internet history).

If you still have problems then you can try more drastic measures.

Now you want to determine what updates Windows has installed. click START - ALL PROGRAMS - WINDOWS UPDATE
then "view update history" this will show all updates and the date applied. Write down the names and numbers of the updates the were applied in the last few days. Do not start a Windows update.

Now go to START -CONTROL PANEL - UNINSTALL A PROGRAM - click on "view installed" updates. you now have a list of all installed Windows updates.

At this point you can try to uninstall the updates most recently installed. Or Google them to see if other people are having problems. I say try - because some may not allow themselves to be uninstalled.

With Vista you cannot uninstall updates. Windows installer will not work in Safe Mode. If there is a way I'd like to know!

I am having the very same problem!!! I spent 12 hours with microsoft in one day a several more over the next few weeks; today I called only to learn that if I pay the $20 to buy the recovery CD from Compaq/HP they cannot garuntee that it will work I told the women its like going to the Doctor because I feel a bump etc and being told I have cancer and soon will die as its terminal although I will still be responsible for paying the Dr.'s bill; I asked if my computer is terminal she said I must pay their "highly trained techs" as microsoft offered same but since its an OEM(whatever that is) hp is respnsible for its functioning; what a crock I guess I want a Mac as their stuff is created for, well their stuff!!! I am in safe mode and I give up at this point. I was told that a power outage may have caused my harddrive to be corupt but the electric company Progress Energy won't acknowledge their fault, they were trying to shut oiff my neighbors for non payment and the meter numbers have been switched they said its my fault, hell i just rent here how is this possibly my fault??? When we moved in 1.5 yrs ago the old downstairs neighbors had them come out and check if our bills were being switched I guess they didn't fix it and now its my problem!!! What a total farce!!! I hate Progress energy I hate HP and the horses they rode in on. I am nearly handicapped without my computer bills I pay on-line things i look up etc all gone due to this as I cannot afford a new one atm, thanks for heariing me out. if only I knew how to fix in safe mode as this is the only way to log on.

This has happened because of a Microsoft update:

In Safe mode (F8 at boot up)
Start-search for cmd
With search result -cmd- right click choose option Run as Administrator
type in- net user administrator/ active:yes
type- exit
restart- pc logon screen should show administrator account
if you can logon through this account, alter any accounts you want through control panel

Sometimes this problem can be resolved with just a simple Virus Scan, Boot your pc in safe mode, not networking or anything then use AVG if you have it because it works well with safe mod or use AntiVir Peronal as that is a great scanner, then when they've complete just debug all infected files and reboot, this worked with me but i cant assure that itl work with you, its a bit of a shot but it could end up with good results
pease be sure to let me know how this works
