Hello,
my desktop computer will not power up. i am not sure what to do. i took it to best buy and the technician opened the case and checked the power supply and it checked out fine. he powered it up and it was fine. i asked them to do a diagnostic test and left it with them. after a week i stopped by to pick up the pc. however, when i went to pick it up they said they were unable to complete the test because it would not would not power up. the technician (who helped me the last time) was able to power it up on the spot and was not clear why the other technician was unable to start it. he gave me my money back on the diagnostic test and told me to take it home b/c it was fine and should work. he suggested that i back it up and re-format the harddrive to avoid future issues. well, when i got home, it did not work. i still can not power up the pc. when i press the power button, absolutely nothing happens (i.e., no fan, no power, nothing). can you please help me?

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hey there,

if the technicians over there could not help you then im not very sure to be able to help you. i will tell you just to do something if you think you can do that and that you wont fry up the motherboard. just try to unplug all the unecessary stuffs inside the casing i mean the hard disk, dvd rom drive all the other pci cards you have plugged onto the motherbaord just leave the basics things that is the graphics card(if it is non-integrated), the ram, and the cpu and then just try to switch it on. if it switches on correctly that means the the basic things are alright.

if you are having problems afterwards just repost an add here.

Hello Signaldown,

Thank you so much for the reply! I am not sure of how to do the things you suggested, so will take your advice and not do so for fear of frying the motherboard. I will take it to Circuit City since Best Buy was not able to help. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

No power at all. Try this. unplug the main power plug and the dubbl black and yello plug from the mother bord.then plug in the ac. power cord to the power supply unit.then use a jumpper wire to connect the green wire with any black wire that is close to the green one on the main power plug to the mother bord.the power supply should come on.next pull out the jumpper and unplug the ac.power..then replug the two plugs back into the mother bord. then plug up and start up your PC.Cooool....

Well first take out your RAM and clean the golden strips with a soft cloth or rub gentely with eraser
also check your power button to see if it is working or not or simply replace it with reset button ( just exchange the reset and power button wires ) happened to me once my power button was faulty and i thought my motherboard was gone ...
dont always trust the pc technicians they my jusy try to loot u

I have this problem with my Dell desktop. I first noticed it when the office was cold and it was only when the heating was put on and the office warmed up that it would start. As that always took sometime, I had the idea of using a "hair dryer" to warm the PC before switching on the power. That is what I have been doing for the last year or so and it works. However, I would like to solve the problem and only get the PC to start when I power up. Please let me know if this works for you. I mentioned this to a PC techi and he could not find a solution for me.

A client brought me this pc today it was an hp s7700n slimline. He said it would not power up.
We found no problem until we connected the ethernet cable and powered off the pc. It would not power up until we unplugged the etheenet cable or unplugged the main ac cord and waited for the p/s light to go out.
My best guess is it is the hardware going bad. all settings look good and we tryed several combinations.
I also noticed this problem does not happen if you use a usb mouse and keyboard. But it fails to re start with a ps2 connection.
Any other thoughts let me know. Brad.hechler@comcast.net
