Hi I bought my new latop Dell inspiron 1525 using os vista in October and would like to restore it to it's origional factory settings, however I have been unable to do this as I have been told a number of different actions to try by PC performance and none of them work: First I was told to press f8 on a reboot then select repair my computer so I pressed f8 and there was no option to repair my computer; Second I was told to restart and press f12 insert a blank dvd and boot using cd/dvd which would create a boot disc which in turn would restore to factory settings, after choosing boot from cd/dvd my laptop just restarts as normal without creating a boot disc; I was then told to burn recovery (which was on a small drive D:) to disc first then boot from cd/dvd which has no effect again windows starts normally.........so being nosey I had a look around this recovery file and found a setup icon that said factory restore when I clicked on it, I got the message ERROR: the factory image could not be found please reinstall using the operating system media dvd.
any help on this would be fantasic as I am now at my wits end.

Windows Complete PC Recovery
Restores the contents of your hard disk from a backup. Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is not included with Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, or Windows Vista Home Premium. But if you have the system tool that is in your computer that has a system recovery on your hard drive. it is easy to do. Find the system restore in your tools menu thin skip the restore prompts and do a recovery. I hope this works for you. I have used this a few times.

This is easy. Tap F8 on your keyboard until a screen you do not see on start up pops up. Once there use your arrows to highlight repair your computer. You should now have a list of System Recovery Options. You can try many of these options before taking the drastic step of restoring from an image but if you are sure that is what you want to do, then click Dell Factory Image Restore and follow the prompts. Then you should be all set

if you have a compaq or hp just strt up and as soon as you see the compaq or hp logo press f11 then follow instructions
Hey folks a thing to remember when doing these restores is before you do all that shut your system down and remove the battery then trty to restart the computer. In the cases I have seen where the monitor wouldnt load that usually if not always works.
If you have a dell computer which is after September 2005 with XP on it. You need to press Ctrl + F11 as soon as the system starts. If you have the Dell computer with Vista installed on it then you need to press F8 to reach to Advanced Boot Menu. There you need to select the option Repair your computer. Then you need to select the keyboard layout (Type 1 and then press enter). Then log in on your user account (Make sure that is an Administrator Account). Then choose the option Dell Factory Image Restore.
If you have the HP Computer then the Recovery has two option one is Destructive Recovery (Data Loss) and Non - Destructive (Data Back-up). You just need to Press F11 as soon as the computer restart. Then follow the on screen instruction and choose the option accordingly.

I followed the instructions and do not see Dell Factory Image Restore. It is not an option for me? Any suggestions?
Well first, since you don't see that option, you need to restore your factory defaults. NOTE THAT YOU WILL LOOSE ALL, ALL DATA. Factory defaults means you will have your computer the way you had it when you first got it. Now, you say you have a dell computer. Go to www.dell.com search up dell chat support or find it near the bottom of the page (may need to search it first then look at bottom of page under support) After that ask them what disc you should use to restore factory defaults. They will tell you and after that, they may give you a guide, if not, put in the CD while shutting down your computer and reboot it. Then follow the steps that come up on your screen. Good luck. I am trying to restore my computer to factory fresh also... it is a VPR Matrix Model 1600 Windows XP
Use the restore disks to restore to original factory defaults. Note that you will loose ALL DATA. For more help go to your products website (if you have a sony go to www.sony.com and go to chat support if you have dell go to www.dell.com and search chat support) FOR MORE PROBLEMS CHECK OUT www.bestcomputersupport.web.com JOB OPEN!
Attention anyone reading this: Simply hit ctrl-f11 on any dell computer after 2004 during the startup phase (Before you see the windows icon) to get to the restore factory default space. If your computer is completely compromised, this is usually the easiest fix, and can save you hundreds of dollars that you would normally spend on a 'computer consultant' or the like.

personally if you never made a restore cd then what you should do, in fact even if you make a restore cd is go to the HP webstie support and order a restore cd. Just got mine a year after I bought my system, due to system is starting to act funky so better be safe then sorry. Besides the ordered media will have everything which came with your system
if you show errors go into bios (restart, push esc)go into boot section turn off hard drive, restart pc,run recovery disk, when error comes up again resart pc, go back into bios turn on hard drive, run the rest of restore should work if it does, and should send comment to toshiba lay off the drugs or quit ripping people off.
yes I'm po'd I 've had tech's telling me I need a new hard drive, motherboard pretty much a new pc and my uneducated computer azz geek figured it out without buying anything. usually caused by lack of

Hello. I did the F8 thing, & I got it to work. When it asked for the Administrators password, I didn't know it, so I guessed a possibility. I clicked ok & it froze. I waited for about 20 minutes & still nothing so I restarted it. Now when I hit F8 at the start up screen, it says a disk read error occurred. hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart. I restart & repeat the process & still the same message. How can I fix this? You've been a great help!

ok here is the problem!
trying to fix a friends dell 1525 laptop, I went to restore to factory defaults and forgot the battery
was very low, shut off in the middle of the restore process. so now can't do that again?
I did some research and downloaded a iso image/burned it of a rescuecd, went through the
steps it told me to do, mounted windows in linux shell, then rm -rf a directory/file?
and umounted windows again, then rebooted and tried the factory restore, but just kicked me back to
the repair screen.
Any solutions please???

Okay adding to this:
When I went to try and repair the startup, I was able to view some of the messages(errors)
and one was saying "the operating system is incompatible with the current version of
startup repair"
So I was talking to someone I know about who knows about computers/etc.
He seems to think(maybe right?) that the Winvista on it now is not the windows that
was on it when it was shipped @Dell

My sons Acer 5920 laptop developed a virus.
On reinstalling with my made recovery disks I deleted all partions on the drive (all the hidden ones to- Don't ask!!)
Is there anyway of reinstalling the partitions to the origional configeration?
Only other hastle I have now, is the machine does not recognise the HDD is installed.
I spoke to Acers support but they were about as much help as a kick in the teeth.
All what they wanted to do was (A) SEND THEM THE MACHINE AT THE COST OF £59 SO THEY COULD LOOK AT THE MACHINE AND IF THEY FOUND AN ISSUE THE REPAIR WOULD BE EXTRA. (B) BUY THE ORIGIONAL FACTORY DISKS OFF THEM FOR £50.
They would not answer my question when I asked what the difference was between the back up disks I made and the ones they want to sell me, nor would they answer when I asked if these factory disks would partion the HDD to origional factory config.
Any Help would be welcome.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.
Note:
You must press <F8> before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press <F8> after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.
3 Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>.
4 Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
5 Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
6 Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
7 In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
8 Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.
9 Click Next.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
10 When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Once you restore it will it erase what is already saved on the computer? I have hp vista and I want to restore my audio card. Any ideas/
If it's just your audio that has run amuck, DO NOT USE RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS. Try this: uninstall the driver for your audio card. You can do this in by going to Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings, Hardwarel, Device Manager, Sounds etc. Your audio card should be listed there. Uninstall it. Reboot and the computer should automatically re-install the driver. And this should correct your problem.
did you find out how I to restore to factory settings did not see any answers

Yes, but on the prompts you get an option if you want to back up your files do it before you restore your factory setting. I have done this and it works fine. I just copied my files to an external hard drive, did a full factory restore and re copied my files back to my computer. It can take a while, but its worth it.

I dont know if this will help anyone, I have the HP Pavillion dv6000 with windows vista. To restore to factory settings when you hit the start button the first screen that appears has the HP Symbol in the center of the screen. When this appears hit the F11 key. Then follow the on screen instructions. It will offer you to either restore to last saved point or to restore to factory settings. There are a few other options offered, like do you want to back up you files etc.
I hope this helps.
I hope this helps.
help me plz! I have hp pavilion 360n that suposed to be XP but my sis installed vista on it! I dont have any restore disks so dont ask. but when I hit F11 at startup I get a completely odd menu that tells me about the hardware and such on the computer nothing about restoring or repair. If I click F8 I go to advanced boot options but there is NO repair your computer option or anything like it. Ive clicked on lots of things but nothing does a restore D: I really need to wipe this computer clean and back to XP. Plz somebody HELP ME!!! :(
for windows vista factory restore: power on the computer and press F8 kry right as the dell screen appears, and then hit enter on "repair computer" then on dell factory image restore> that will help you out
first and foremost remove partition magic, and any anti-virus on computer.save any thing of importance on a disc.disconnect from internet.reboot computer when it arrives at www. dell.com press cyl and f11 at same time.will take you to system restore, original factory settings.click restore and ur on ur way
hello. I wasnt sure how to get a message on here about restoring computers, but I dont have a dell. I have a sony vaio, and I think this is the model: VGN-N320E
my computer is a complete mess. somehow, the program directx9 was deleted, and I even went to microsoft to download it, yet I still cant run the program that needs it. it tells me "failed to enumerate any DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system! and it aborts my program. a bunch of stuff 'magically' disappears on my computer, and my sony vaio doenst even kno its a sony vaio. there are many things wrong with it, but I also would like to just totally restore/reboot/ start all over, and my laptop never came with discs. and if they did then those disappeared as well. cuz im pretty good at being organized and keeping track of things, and im pretty sure I would of rememberd getting disks with my computer.
i guess my question is, is it the same with a sony vaio as a dell, to press F8 b4 seeing the windows symbol to reboot/restore/start all over?? someone please let me know. my email is Email id removed for security
i really need help, my laptop is a complete mess!!
im very good with computers, but im not a total pro.
thanks.

if you need to restore the pc to the factory settings you can do it by restarting the pc, then pressing f10 several times... at the first screen hit enter, then on the other screen choose the option restore c drive and follow instructions... you can also have help contacting tech support 1-800-488-7669
Hi, I too was experiencing that problem with an old Sony Vaio VGN . here's how I fixed it, by a miracle, with no recovery disk.
turn on pc
hit f2 to enter bios,
enable boot from network
change boot priority, so nework is on top.
reboot, and hit f12 so it will attempt to boot from network
If you're as lucky as I was, you'll soon see an option to restore your computer to factory settings.
then just go through the wizard as you'd prefer to do it.
hope it works for many others out there too.
