Hello,

I have my desktop on automatic update for Windows XP. It was updating and locked up. It went from bad to worse. It would not boot up into windows after that. Then I tried to use the recovery disk that came with the system. Now it goes in circles. It boots up to the screen to choose setup, boot choice, recovery, and then it tries to read from the cd & dvd drives then goes to a black screen with a curser blinking in the top left corner then shuts off and restarts and does it all over again. It keeps cycling over and over like that until it I have to turn it off.

I have done the recovery disks over and over. There are two disks from Hp and it never goes back into Windows. It does not sound good.

Any suggestions.

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

Hi Bill, I had exactly the same problem this morning.

To solve it, I had to boot into Windows' Safe Mode; press F8 before the Windows loading screen appears to get this option.

Once signed in, you'll be prompted to a) continue in Safe Mode, or b) Restore a previous install point.

Choose option b) and then follow the instructions. If the same problem (black screen after Windows has started up) persists once you've rebooted, sign in with Safe Mode again and restore to an earlier install point.

For reference, I had to do this twice but everything is back to normal and I've made a point of changing Automatic Update to notify me before installing.

HTH!

Same problem with a twist. Every time that I try to use any of the safe modes or anything listed on the screen where "safe mode" is selected, the computer asks for User Name and password. The computer does not accept the password, is there any way to bypass this or circumvent it?

Yeah i am having a similar problem as well. This sounds eerily similar to what happened to my computer. When my computer crashed, it kept telling me that my hard drive didn't exist. I tried using the HP Pavilion application recovery discs, but they don"t work. They tell me my hard drive is non-existent and that the M thing is busted, but i know my drive isn't dead, because I'm typing this on that same computer. My tech friend installed Linux on it, but i want to have Microsoft back. Any advice?
