Hello,

I hope that more enlightened Mac users will be able to help me.
My G4 Powerbook will turn on, chime, but not boot. It goes to a black screen (?the single-mode user screen?) and reads: /etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory

I have, as of late, been ignoring my laptop's ominous warnings: The start-up disk is almost full.
Unfortunately, I put off figuring out what that meant. Now, it seems as if my HD is too full to start.
So... is there a way that I can remove files from the hard drive to enable it to start?

After researching, I have tried the following:
Using FirstAid in Disk Utility: Each time it repairs the HFS Volume. Meaning that, once it has repaired the HFS volume and I check it again, it says that it has fixed it again. If it fixes it each time, is it really fixed?
PROptionCommand @ start-up
Apple Hardware Check

I haven't yet been able to start the computer in "Safe Mode."

Thank you for any suggestions you may have to offer.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.3

Hello,

this kind of problem i would recommend that you get the help of a mac technician ifself because its a bit difficult for you to debug it by yourself.

If your machine has all the updates and stuff
(and im not sure, but my ibook G4 can do it so im assuming that your powerbook can too)
if you get a double-ended firewire cable,
attach one to your powerbook, and the other to another mac
(im not sure if you can with a windows pc or not, but its worth a shot.)

boot your mac and hold down Cmd-t
youll get a large grey firewire symbol on the screen, and the boot drive will be mounted as an external firewire drive on the other computer.
delete what you dont need (or back it up on the comp your on)
then boot!

You can also try to re install your operating system to give yourself a clean slate so to speak.
