Hello,
My network was running a dream until i installed the service pack 3 on a unauthoised copy of windows. Now the computer see'sthe network but sais it can't find the path and that i dont have sufficient authorisation to access the network. I have literally tried everything to resolve this issue and i come to the conclusion that there is something in the SP3 that has limited my network access on the machine that doesn't have thje licensed copy of XP on it (the other machine is fully legal). I can see the network from both sides but Mcafee (which runs on both PC's only sees the network on the legal machine. Please help if you know anything.
Thanks in advance.....I'm about to buy another machine (with a legal copy of.... dare i say it Vista)

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0.3

You might try so or all of the following (adding NetBios over Tcpip has been the fix for many people)

click on start, run, enter 'services.msc'

look for DHCP client….
if it says acquiring network address that means that the dhcp client is DISABLED OR STOPTED… highlight the DHCP client and on the left side you will see “START” the service, click on it and then it will say “STOP, RESTART” then double click on the service and on the startup type select automatic, apply

Symptom
DHCP Client Service may not start automatically. When you attempt to start the Service manually, the following error may be displayed:

Error: Could not start the DHCP Client Service on local computer
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Resolution
The DHCP Client Service in Windows XP, depends on these three components:
* AFD
* NetBios over Tcpip
* TCP/IP Protocol Driver

If one of the above drivers fail to start, then the DHCP Client Service may not start.
Step I - Make sure that the three driver files are present

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to /Windir/System32Drivers folder. Make sure that the following files are present in the folder:

* afd.sys
* tcpip.sys
* netbt.sys

If one or more of the above driver files are missing, extract them from the Windows XP CD-ROM or from the ServicePackFilesi386 folder, whichever is the latest version.

Step II - Verify the number of Dependencies

From other sources in the Web, I've found that some versions of Norton Antivirus (NAV) adds an entry to the DHCP Service Dependencies, and removing NAV does not remove the appropriate value from the DHCP Dependencies.

To quickly determine the Dependency services for DHCP Client Service, type the following command in Start, Run dialog:

CMD /K SC QC DHCP

Verify the output. It should be exactly as below:

[SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: dhcp
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START
ERROR_CONTROL : 1 NORMAL
BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe -k netsvcs
LOAD_ORDER_GROUP : TDI
TAG : 0
DISPLAY_NAME : DHCP Client
DEPENDENCIES : Tcpip
: Afd
: NetBT
SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

If additional entries are listed under DEPENDENCIES…
If any other additional drivers or Services are mentioned in the DEPENDENCIES section, you need to remove them via the registry. Follow these steps:

* Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
* Navigate to the following branch:
* Backup the branch to a REG file

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Dhcp

* Double-click DependOnService MULTI_SZ value and set it's data as follows:

Tcpip
Afd
NetBT

* Close Regedit.exe

Step III - Verify that the Dependency Service / components are running

Next step is to verify that the three dependency components are running. As the three components are actually the Kernel Drivers (Driver Service), you need to manage then via the Device Manager. Follow these steps:

* Click Start, Run and type DEVMGMT.MSC
* In the View menu, click Show hidden devices
* Double-click Non-Plug and Play drivers section
* Double-click the entry - AFD Networking Support Environment, and click the Driver tab
* Set the Startup type to System.
* Start the service. Note down the error message if any.
* Similarly start the two other drivers namely:

* TCP/IP Protocol Driver
* NetBios over Tcpip

* Close Device Manager and restart Windows.

Xpcman,
Greetings and salutaions ...

HOORAY for a TECH suggestion which works ...

I too had similar grief after trying to uninstall .NET(2.x) from my XP computer ...
after re-boot No network & No internet ... argghh!
( lucky I have more than one computer from which I can go on-line )
tried all sort of other M$ suggestion, , winsock replacers, etc, BUT nada, nothing.

after I had re-done the netwrking manually and from the XP install CD ... I had noticed the tcpip.sys was a newer version than the SP update I was using - but at the time dismissed that fact ...

I tried all sorts of registry hacks, but under manage was unable to start TCP/IP - no matter what I tried .

even after starting this line of attack using your suggested paths - I still hit a brick wall , until I finally decided to backup, and replace the TCPIP.SYS with the one from the install CD !!!
Immediately the TCPIP was able to STARTed.

at last, after a couple of days I am back on line - persistence pays off
Thanks.

Hey,
this is great help, and got me a lot further already.
However, when I go to the device manager, AFD is not part of non-PnP-driver (wheras TCPIP, and NetBios are). AFD is also not listed when I go search through the services (services.msc). funnily enough however i cannot start afd manually either, as it then says it is already running. shutting it down also fails so I cannot restart it. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Hello there.
I have recently installed the sp3 update and everything was running fine till yesterday when I tried to connect to the internet.
I have a user name and password from my ISP. When I'm trying to connect it just won't start.

I tried the Network Connections - New Connection Wizard - Connect to the INternet - Set up my connection manually as I was doing all the time when I was reinstalling my OS.
Guess what ? Now I can only choose "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on" from the 3 options which normaly can be choosen.

That is hard for me to understand why it won't let me choose the "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password" that should work.

Can you please help me with that ?

I really appreciate.

Have a good one. Bogdan

I had similar problem recently and i tried everything to no luck. so what i finally did was to stop all the services. I
run>type services.msc>enter. in services un-check all the boxes and select 'enable all services '. All sevices are stopped. Restart your system and voila! all services that could not be turned on before got started. I was able to connect back to the internet. Good luck.

In my "non plug and play driver" there is not anymore the TCPIP.

In windows/system32/driver there is the tcpip.sys
How can I do to install again it into the Device manager ?

With this error I can not connect to Internet anymore (error 702)

Many thanks
