Do you have a LAN now? If you do then go to "connect to" in your Vista PC and click on "view network Devices" you should see your Win XP PC. you will new to change the "Share" properties in explorer to allow access from the other PC.

IF you don't have a LAN go to the following link fo more info:

First of all you need a cross over cable.The utp wire comes in two flavors.Cross over and a patch.so for peer take a cross over cable and connect.assign 2 different ip addresses.
go to start->control panel->netwok connections->local area connection->properties(Right click)->tcp/ip->use manual ip and assign address.

to chk if they are configured properly or not use ping command.

U can buy a switch ! its not expensive about 10 $ ! and connect the switch onto these 10 machines using a straight throught cable ( there 3 kind of cabling one of them is straight through (patch) ) ....next step is to assing an ip address manually to all these machines ! u go to > start > my network places > view network connection > right click on local area connection > properties > u click on tcp/ip version 4 > and then u assingn a ip address like 192.168.1.1 !
to be clear and easy understanding ... u make the same steps on evry machine but with changing the ip address ( u can change the last 1 ) and now u got ur lan !!

I was able to connect two PCs with an ethernet cable.

Gave following ip to one PC
ip -> 192.168.1.2
mask -> 255.255.255.0
gateway -> 192.168.1.1

to other PC
ip -> 192.168.1.4
mask -> 255.255.255.0
gateway -> 192.168.1.3

this worked.

Configure static network settings,
Ip 192.168.1.10 for desktop and 192.168.1.11 for laptop
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

connect both the systems with cross cable
