Hello,
i would like to know if there is any way that i can get rid of inux fedora core 2 and instal windows xp instead?
xp cd will just not boot no matter what?
I have tried to get rid of fedora by going to linux command prompt. but fdisk does not function!
then i tried win98 cd. It does boot! I tried to format the HD using the win98 installation but when it gets to the part where it says that I have a non-dod partiiton which must be removed before installation continuse i select yes but the pc just hangs.
I only hav one partition which is using all the space of my HD!
I tried booting with the win98 cd then going to ms-dos mode to try fdisk.
fdisk does run.
but when I progress through the menu and select the option to view partition info my pc just freezes!
I tried to select the command to format non-dos partition and my pc crashes!
i CANNOT use any partition software because for some stupi reason linux fedra core2 just doesn't run .exe files!
Is there anyone that can help me out with my frustrating experience, I swear i will never touch linux again!

Configuration: Windows Vista
Internet Explorer 7.0

Hmm...

use partition manager that built in on linux installer is not easy like last post written.

like of,

some users use linux mandrake / mandriva to install their pc's, but for their foulness they want change back to last os (maybe in this case, i say the last os is XP), then they will use your way to delete the partition...?

mandrake is harder to remove using another distrubution partition manager, even mandrake is legacy of mandriva you can take easy to remove the partition using mandriva cd / PM.

red hat also same type with mandrake distribution, you can not remove it without using the same version of distribution installer disc,

btw, some transformation linux is more easily to remove with standard linux installer disc (i.e. :puppy linux, dsl, lindows, etc...)

Is easy man,
first : make your computer boot from your cd/dvd by default
2- enter your windows xp cd and run the installation
3- when will is time to make new partitions , just delete all the unknown partitions and create new one for window.

that`s all, windows doesen`t reconize the ext3 partitions that`s why in the partition table will look : unknown.

and is done , me i made it several time and worked fine

Put your cd rom on first boot device, then as you get the screen loading windows. you will get an option repair.

after typing R, command prompt will open. put 1 as an option. then after getting on command prompt. type in a command
FIXMBR
then restart your computer and see the miracle

(It seems many of the people posting here are, like, 14 years old. And kinda dumb. "Retarded"? Seriously? Sheesh.)

The Windows XP install CD just will not run if your primary hard drive has Linux partitions. It'll get to the hardware checking stage, then go to a blank screen. No, it doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is.

Just boot from a Linux CD and ditch all the partitions on the primary hard drive, then try the Windows XP install again. It should be fine. You can probably do the same with a Win2K or Vista disk - I just always find Linux more useful for this sort of thing. Good luck!

What to do is install ubuntu,
once installed go to SYSTEM at the top of the screen,
then under Preferences (from memory) you will find "partition manager"
you need to format a partition(referably the largest) back to fat32"
once you have done that try restarting and Go into the BIOS (press F1 at boot time) and switch the Hard Drive interface out of AHCI mode.
once you have done that insert your xp disk and it will now see your hard drive,
piece of piss

I had this same problem. Following (sort of) the advice here, I installed and ran GPartEd, then chose to create a partition table (which wiped out the existing partitions). Then restarted, and the machine saw the XP CD

It is not that simple for me at least.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my hard drive, used "whole partition". Then I figured out I wanted to go back to Windows XP, and maybe create a dual boot.

But, my problem is that I can't install XP when I formated my disk with ext3 and installed ubuntu on it, because windows does not recognize the file system. "Can't recognize the disk" or something. This occurs when I chose to install XP, same menu/window you can press "R" to repair.

I've tried to delete the partition table, but I can't save it somehow, because when I reboot I can boot my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, without installing it... I've also tried to press "Finish", but I've to select where to boot from.

I hope this was understandable, and please, don't guess.. I'm really frustrated, would be much appreciated that someone with knowledge and experience replied.

Regards,
John Smith

As I read this, I have to wonder about the future of our world.

This easiest solution to this whole mess is to boot from your Linux install disk, regardless of your chosen flavor(fedora, red hat, ubuntu...) and reformat your HDD with the FAT32 file system. I will concede that this may not work for every Linux flavor out there, being that each installation is different, but all flavors can read a FAT32 file system, so I am betting they can write it also. I do know for a fact that SuSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu all have the ability during installation to format your HDD with a FAT32 FS. Once you have formatted manually, quit the installation and reboot the system on your OS install of choice.....*yawn* It really isn't all that hard....

I had ubuntu linux instaled on my laptop, and i was able to remove ubuntu partition in the windows setup. before you delete the partition, you shout remove the linux loade using the windows receverie module (cd win, r, comand) and type fixmbr this wil restore the windows bootloader (and remove grub). after you have done this you can use the win cd to format the linux partition in a usable filesystem and instal windows.

it workt fine with ubuntu(also has grub loader) and win 2000

Albana Mino, on Oct 14, 2009 8:48:15 am BST

Hi, i had the same problem.

I sent an e-mail to my Linux instructor and he responded with this solution:

"You can wipe away the partition table of the hard disk in linux by issuing the following command (in command line mode, after you've logged in as root):

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=521 count=1

( if you have 1 IDE hard disk , the primary master, hence /dev/hda )

After that, reboot your system, any installation system will think that you have a brand new hard disk."

I tried the above command and it did the trick beautifully (perhaps only for Radix flavour). Now I have Windows XP on my PC.

Thanks to all.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND KILLDISK, JUST DOWNLOAD THE FREE VERSION OF IT, ISO VERSION. PUT A BLANK CD INTO YOUR COMPUTER. INSTALL IT ONTO THE DISK VIA THE APPLICATION THAT YOU DOWNLOADED. INSERT THE CD INTO THE COMPUTER YOU ARE WISHING TO WIPE, BOOT FROM THAT CD AND SELECT THE FIRST WIPE SEQUENCE AS IT IS A FREE VERSION IT WILL TAKE LONGER, WORKED FIRST TIME PERFECTLY :)

Ok all you have to do, is nuke your hard drive. or you can just repartition your hard drive, so it will be blank, then install xp, which should work like a charm! if you need any help, just email me at Kirby.Rodney@gamil.com

i can give you some good free nukers, if you'd like, but repartitioning your hard drive with the xp installation disk is much simpler, and then you could have both linus and xp, i have windows 7 beta, linux mint, windows xp, and mass storage on my external hard drive alone. partitioning is a good thing to do:)

Step 1 - Download Killdisk.
Step 2 - Follow instructions (i.e create bootable CD/USB/Floppy)
Step 3 - Boot using bootable CD/USB/Floppy
Step 4 - Format your hard disk with Killdisk. (It takes about 45 mins for a 40GB Hard disk)
Step 5 - Install preferred operating system.
Step 6 - Done!

Guys, its enough to erase zero record at that disk. You can use SeaTools from Seagate for this task for example. Its faster than formatting of a whole disk.
