External hard drive problems for macs

Hello,
ive just bought an imac os x 10.2.8 with a very small hard drive, is there any way i can use my external hard drive as the macs main drive? this would help for itunes etc. where i need more space for music files? i have my music and itunes on my ext.drive but when i try to copy into the library it uses the macs hard drive!! im brand new to macs so go easy please!!

You can put another hard drive make the first one muster and the second one slave
