Hello,
I have an acer aspire one notebook bought in Norway, Oslo. It operates on Linux software. My problem is that it connects to the wireless at my university and picks up signal powerfully, its just that when I'm connected I cannot browse the internet. My browser is firefox and I am clueless on what could be the problem. Strangely it connects and browses when I connect to lan in the library. Hope that you can help me. Thank you

Configuration: Linux Fedora
Firefox 2.0.0.14

I am having the same issue with my father in laws computer. I have set up a wireless network via USB flash drive. All computers are Windows XP. I was able to connect the Acer without the firewall or WEP protection on the primary computer but I was still unable to browse the internet or use printers on the network. Once I was able to connect I was able to stay connected with "excellent" signal. Does anyone know how this can be fixed? IS there a driver or something that needs to be downloaded to fix this issue? Please let me know.

Hey Guys,

I have had the same problem, but have found that if you keep trying it generally will work eventually, but its very frustrating. You just switch between Wireless servers that don't work and others that do, and click on google, try connecting again.

mines the linux version too...
Ahhhhhhhhhhh
There were about 5 different wireless internet bases that i could not connect to today....is it getting worse ?

Luck help us all

Most likely because you need a wep key to access your wireless router.

My Acer netbook wifi worked great until I took it on vacation. At the Miami International airport I opened the wifi and discovered the service was not free so I closed the connection. I did the same thing to the Aruba Renaissance. Once I found free connections I could not open the internet – error message not connected to the internet or invalid address. When I got home I had the same problem, using the same connection that worked fine before. I suspect that I picked up something from one of the pay for wifi connections.

Presumably you've checked that your firewall permits access. And tried putting in a favoured DNS address rather than relying on 'automatic'.

I've tried everything you all said above and my Internet Provider (Verizon Fios) told me to contact Acer. They spent 2 hours trying to help me fix the problem. The only way I could access anything was by typing 74.125.19.147 as the address and I got google. I need help too. This is frustrating and I can't get anyone live at Acer.

Well, I found the problem. When I got the Acer, I opened it up without connecting it to my router. Since I couldn't get anyone from Acer I decided to reload everything from scratch again as if I never had done it before. This time, it was connected to my Verizon Wireless router. Voila, it worked I had internet service. The secret to success is to have it hooked to the wireless router when you open your brand new Acer Aspire One. Good luck, I 'm enjoying this baby since December 26th.

I had similar problem on THREE Aspire One computers...I found that if it is plugged into the power cable the internet works fine. Unplug it & oops...it stops working. It says it's connected but then it doesn't load, reset everything it thinks it's connected then drops....it's insane!

One of them we took over to a tech who said it was loaded with a virus. He removed it, charged her $35...it works now. But, we haven't tested it here today. If it works here on my wireless, we'll try to find out what exactly he did, if it doesn't, I'm going to sit in the floor & cry! haha

I'd love to know if anyone else has issues unplugged that correct themselves plugged in? Or is there some simple something I've overlooking? Please help!

Using an averatec running linux I have the same problem, but it varies from site to site. At home it will stay connected for about 1/2 hr. and then stop. At a couple internet cafes it stays connected without a break. At a local library, it will stop about every two mins. So it is unlikely just my machine. Also I have dual boot and have experiemented with a windows connection and that just stays on no matter where I am. So I suspect there is something wrong with the linux driver. I found too that a direct connect via wire just stays on all the time. The wifi card is a ralink.

I have found that it can be quickly reconnected using the following. Fist go and disable the wireless, then enable it and then reconnect. I have been searching around and the problem seems frequent, but no specific solution to be found.

I had the same problem with my acer laptop last year, saying its connected to a wireless connection but not allowing me to browse, sign into MSN messenger etc. I thought it was my university's wireless connection that was the problem so I took it to one of the uni's IT guys. He played around with the laptop's settings for about half an hour and finally got it to work, I'm not sure what it was he did though. I had no problems for over a year but all of a sudden its started doing it again, I haven't changed anything major on my laptop recently so I have no idea why its playing up again all of a sudden. Its driving me mad!

I had that problem over a year ago when I bought the wonderful (lol) acer 4520 for my wife. Now I had to strip the drive and I loaded xp instead of vista. I am having the same problems again. connects to the modem but cant get on internet with wireless or hard line. I cant remember what I did exactly to fix it all I know is there was a list of check boxes and I had to select one for it to work. now I need to figure it out again.

Sorry guys, I know enough to be dangerous but not enough to give precise explanation but for all but the XP user in this thread try TEMPORARILY running your wireless router without WEP or switching to another security protocol (yes even try with no security but be sure to remember to turn it back on after the experiment).

After reading numerous threads and trying Kubuntu on a Dell Latitude D620 and Fedora 10 under Gnome on an Acer AspireOne I have the same problem of strong signal but either no or very little connectivity (and the little bit often drops). On some WEP networks it is fine and fast but at home (on a good/newer linksys wireless G box) I have all of these problems. One poster suggested killing NetworkManager process under Fedora (or knetworkmanager under kde) and my problems went away (after going through hoops manually configuring my wireless info). This is still a hassle - especially when I then travel to other networks where I'd prefer to be using networkmanager - my linksys can do better than wep but my wireless Tivo's can't so I'm still trying to find a better balanced solution.

I have an Aspire One ZG5 running XP, at my weekend house I have the problem that many have described, I lose the wireless connection after a few minutes. Interestingly, I don't have this issue in my primary home so apparently there are compatability issues that contribute to the issue. In my case the dropping of the internet connection definitely seemed to be related to the netbook hibernating.
The following very simple solution worked for me. I turned the network adapter power save mode to off and the problem stopped, here are the steps:
- click "Start"
- click "Control Panel"
- click "Classic View"
- doubleclick "System"
- select "Hardware" tab
- click "Device Manager" button
- click "+" to left of "network adapters"
- doubleclick "Atheros AR5007EG ...."
- click "Advanced" tab
- select "Power Save Mode"
- select "off"
- select "OK"

Thanks so very much Brian. I called acer a couple of times and they made me do this and that and download. I had to call back and do it again, and then they just sent me a new battery, and it still would not connect. I just tried your fix and it works great. I feel like I have a new computer. Now I have to return the battery and get my account credited the $80.00 dollars. What a crazy mess these people are.

Thank You again your a lifesaver

Brian,

Nothing personal but I love you. What do you do for a living? Are you in tech support. I have spent so much time with rude Verizon people who knew nothing. This is INSANELY simple yet incredibly far fetched. Here's what I was facing!!!!!..... MY Acer Netbook worked EVERYWHERE, even on another Verizon FIOS location. Tons of public library wifis, even my car dealership waiting room and over in Ireland, even at restaurants there.

THEN I get to this place I just moved into!!!!!!! nada. kept falling off the net. I think the issue was THIS Verizon FIOS router was a different model than the other one and it's JUST a fraction of a second slower than the other routers and bango! Connection timing out. Wifi connected, couldn't get on net

Who would have THUNK.

Why don't I ever get someone like you at any of the customer support places, huh?

Are you a techie? How did you figure this out????

You and those like you, deserve the world. They (all customer service depts) could eliminate half their people if they would monitor these forums and accumulate solutions instead of telling me to shut off all my firewalls and other nonsense

I have the same problem, except that it is on my asus eee pc 701. It had been working fine until one day i could only connect to the signal (usually above 80%) but was unable to browse the net. Whenever i run firefox, google never loads and returns an error.

The problem is persisting even though it worked fine before. The computer is already 1 year old, so i hope it is only software failure, not a hardware problem. Is there anybody who knows how to solve this problem? A netbook which cannot surf the net is really annoying for me.

I have an Acer Aspire One model XG5 as well. It was working fine before connecting to my wireless internet but has stopped connecting. It shows my wireless network signal as being strong but can't connect. I tried a system restore, stopped my firewall, tried the above suggestion of turning off my Power Save mode and all that, but still no luck. Guess these Acers are pieces of junk, huh? Nothing works. HELP!!! (I'm running windows xp and have no anti-virus program anymore.) I barely have used this machine as I just got it a couple months ago and use my desktop primarily, so I'm sure I don't have a virus.

I had the same issue with my acer netbook, every thing was working fine right up to 2 days ago then i could not get the netbook to bring up my browser. I ran various virus programs and no luck. So i tried the following first i power cycled the netbook (take off your battery and unplug the unit then hit the power button a couple of times b4 putting power to the netbook). After that i powered up the machine and tried to connect and it worked with no problems. I also went into my power settings and set mt wireless card to off on the "power save mode". So far that has worked very well. the "power safe mode" options are explained further up on this page so i will not get into how to get there just follow the post above. Hope this works for you

Thanks for your reply, Hugo. I finally got my laptop to recognize my wireless network by unplugging my wireless router from the wall and from the desktop computer, turning off my laptop, then plugging the router back in and powering up the laptop. Lo and behold the laptop suddenly found a "new connection" with my router and I'm back in business.

I don't know if this really connects to everybody elses response or your question.

But I just got a laptop on ebay and it works and all. And when I was in my paw-paws house his wi-fi connection worked good on my computer. My computer picked up his internet that he bought. But I was also in his house.

But when I got home to my mom's house, she does not pay for internet and she's got an laptop but anyways she is picking up a wi-fi connection from our neighbors house. But when I tryed to pick up the same wi-fi connection she got, my computer did not pick it up.

What is wrong? I know this might not go with your question at all or the other people's response. But I still have no idea what is wrong.

Is my mom's computer stronger and can pick up a wi-fi connection from a longer distance than I can?

And I don't want this to continue in the future. I am planning to take it to tons of places but I don't want this to continue.
