How do you reset the Router? I do not need the security with this router in my house which is isolated, but I cannot seem to find out how to reset the thing. Won't I lose all the basic set up stuff.

I can get internet access with my router when I am connected directly to it, but when I need wireless it asks for Network key and I do not remember it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Presuming we are talking about 802.11 wireless and not cellular based wireless...
The only way to use the same settings at two locations is to set the SSID (wireless site name), Encryption method (WEP, WPA/TSK etc) and key (password for encryption) the same at both locations, and have them both set to DHCP (very uncommon for this not to be the case) and I am not sure, but the channel (frequency) may have to be the same at both locations, but I don't think this is the case.

But, in most PC software you can create profiles. This allows for the storage of connection settings for multiple locations and would be an easier solution for most users as it would try to connect in the priority order you specify to which ever networks are available. So let's say you store the settings for Holiday Inn Dallas, everytime you stay at Holiday Inn Dallas your computer will connect automatically, assuming they don't change thier settings between visits.

Hi,

Try to look for a small hole in the back of your router. Inside the hole there is a liittle button.
Get a toothpick , place the toothpick on to the button, and hold it stil for 1 minute . when you see he router blink it is reset, try that , i got it sorted,

Hard wire to the router and verify you have internet
then
start - run - cmd
in the dos box type ipconfig /all
look for the default gateway
open internet explorer and type in the default gateway number from above (it goes right were you would type www.google.com)
it should prompt you for a password. Most linksys are no username and admin as the password by default, or whateer you changed it to when it was setup. If this doesn't work you will need to reset the router (read as loose all settings and start over on your router)
if you do get logged in go to the wireless tab then security and write down your key or change it to something you will then know.

A remote possiblilty is to auto configure the linksys. This can be done if you have a linksys wireless card and a newer linksys modem - you'll have to look on linksys site for directions on that, I have never actually done it.

Good luck

Are you using 192.168.1.1 (if that is what your ipconfig /all shows) - you had stated 198. Might just be a typo, but worth noting. The other thing is to verify you are wired (not wireless)

If you are still getting connection interrupted you probably have issues with your NIC, network cable, or router.

No. You may lose access to network shares.. access to files on remote computers, but the files themselves will remain intact, and this would pertain only to the small percentage of people that use file sharing across thier network.

Nothing should "pop up" Afer you have connected the network cable from your PC's network jack to your router. Simply go to your internet browser and see if you have internet. Once internet connectivity is confirmed proceed with the instructions posted earlier. If you do not have internet connectivity you have a larger problem than the key for your wireless being lost for which I would consult your ISP.

So, i cant log in when i type in the gateway number.
All i want to do is log on from my laptop, but i dont really want to reset my router cause im not the one who set it up, my grandpa did, and he passed away some time ago.
idk who put the Network password on the thing but its never been there before, but my laptop needs one.
so what would i have to do after resetting the router?

I presume you mean it is prompting for login but you don't know the password to log in to the router, and have tried the default username and password for your brand of router (a quick google search will normally find the default login)

That being said, the last resort of resetting your router could be extremely basic (reset and it will reboot and be back on line, this is typically of a basic cable modem setup) or it could be more complicated (You have DSL that requires PPPoE login information, and if you reset the router this information will need to be found through calling your internet provider, or in your installation paperwork) There are less common settings that affect permanent addresses for printers, and servers, and sometimes routers will contain routing information for certain ports like those for connecting remotely to a particular PC from other internet addresses. It may be easier for you to go out and buy a wireless access point (not another router) and connect it to the router, and use that for wireless access.

If it's a linksys router which you stated it was you can install the linksys software on the notebook (laptop) and use the easy connect software to auto populate the wireless key. However you may need to configure the router over hardwire first to have the notebooks wireless Mac Address recognized by the router as a machine with access to the network.

Hope this helps, for anyone with this issue.
