Never ever say updating can corrupt your computer that thing don't make a common sense, the truth is you might have been downloaded infected files or thing that a window don't like, the solution is to put a new operating sysem.

I thought I was alone with this update issue everone here seems to be experiencing. Sad to say we have no more OS choices to chose from except Apple, whom I dislike as much as Windows, and Linux, whom I hardly see used except in sever environments,.Time for some next-gen OS with a youthful CEO and not some old pro.

Yes, there is a problem with one of 10 updates loading this week. My hard drive would not boot, it crashed and needed restoration. I replaced the HD and then discovered that it was not perm damaged. when reinstalling the OS (win xp) it would not repair and I had to format the HD (leaving the files on did not work). I have turned updates off until I can find resolution to this problem. My computer is a toshiba portege m200.

I have 2 HP dv2000 Laptops with windows Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit after installing updates my systems have crashed just as the update was 100% complete. At the restart of the update the boot loader would indicate a error and encourage a system restore.

I just bought an ACER X1200 about a month ago. everything working great. i thought i had turned off those annoying auto updates.

well, nope, because the same update you guys are writing about crashed my PC and i had to reformat the harddisk and start from scratch.

customer service at ACER was cool, but said it was microsoft's fault for sending out updates that aren't ready. unbelievable.

i'm definitely backing everything up to an external drive now.

VISTA sucks.

The same thing happened to me, I have a Dell Vostro. I restarted my pc as prompted, to install the vista updates. Upon restarting, my pc ground to a halt. I kept shuttiing down and restarting, but the same thing every time. It seemed to hang after logging in (on the 'welcome' message). I left it 'hang' for about half an hour, and eventually windows explorer opened, but kept crashing and going EXTREMELY slow.

I launched task manager and tried ending some of the processes.. What seemed to fix the issue, not 100% sure yet, was ending my AVG anti-virus processes. I have seen elsewhere that vista updates can mess up anti-virus software, so maybe there was a conflict going on..

I've learned my lesson the hard way though, I'm defo gonna give ubuntu + linux a try.. sick to the teeth with windows problems, it's scandolous that Microsoft get away with releasing dodgy operating systems, and to top it off even dodgier updates!!

I just had the same problem over thanksgiving weekend. the only way my laptop runs now is on safemode which pretty much won't let you do anything to your computer. i tried system restore and it will only let me go back to the date that th so called update was installed. so im stuck with a laptop that only works in safemode, no audio because that wont work in safemode, cant even go on windows to download anything to repair it, and no antivirus because somehow that doesnt work either. im going to take the antivirus off tonight and see if that will help, it doesnt really matter since it aint working anyways. lol.

My computer crashed a few days ago as well. I always suspected it was this Windows Update a few days ago (Cause it was working really well before that update), and i think you post may have confirmed it. I will turn off Automatic Updates from now on (I only did it for that stupid IE bug, while i already used Firefox)

I've just bought a hard drive enclosure, connected it to my lap top, removed the hard drive from the affected Dell and have started in up as an external drive. It has been and I have been able to read these "updates". Talking about spyware!!!!

At any rate, my intent is to find the recent changes and get rid of thiem off of this hard drive. I'll keep you posted as to how it goes, but at least this process did save my data-I don't know about the expensive software programs that took me forever to load! At any rate, ithis solution might help for those who just need to save data. I suspect there is a way here to recover the drive as wellk, but I'm just not savant enough to figure it out yet.

My pavillion dv 9000 informed me via HP health check i needed to update my BIOS with a new update . foolishly i trusted it . Followed the instructions to the letter. Had no problems downloading. However on trying to restart after instillation it would not. The monitor had strange pictulated bars running vertically 2 inches apart and the system would stop and restart asking me to select recommended start mode (repair files) . NOTHING worked to get the computer to restart but safe mode. HP can take a long walk of a short pier i will NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE!

Same thing happened to me and i was surfing the net to find a solution and someone refered me to this logonfixit.com place. They logged on and fixed it. I didn't have to pay until 2 or 3 days after they fixed it. They wanated me to make sure it was up and running perfertly because they have a 100% guarantee that if they dont fix it you don't pay. My compter is so fast now! its faster then it was when it was new! Theses guys rock, and I text messaged them the other day about a problem i was having with adobe photoshop and the guy logged in and showed me a bunch of tricks that i would have never thought of.. Happy camper!

After reading Mikes comment, I remembered having trouble with my computer! I was surfing the web, and STUPID me opened a tempting link someone sent to me.. I had so many pop up's and viruses running accross my screen, i couldn't ever shut the pages down. And another page would pop up. I shut my computer down. And started it back up.

It was alright for a few minutes, then more full page popups, offshore pages and the like.. I went into yahoo Q&A to find a solution.. I came across a person claiming that they somehow found a remote repair service called logonfixit.com ..

I thought it was just another way to get my money, without fixing my problem, then i read more and other people had recomened logonfixit also. They claimed to fix it or i don't pay. I thought i will try them.. I am very glad i did.

I used the service, and i have been very, very, pleased with logonfixit.. I will agree with Mike, they tech never charged me until the computer was up and running better than it ever has. The tech also called me back to verify that my computer was doing ok. I would have had to take my computer to a shop, it's a heavy pc too. I would have had to call a NERD to come to my home, I did not want to deal with that.

I stayed at home and logonfixit.com solved my problem. I too am a stratified customer.. Thanks

I own a Hewlett Packard PavillionDV900 note book. After receiving a HP care advisory stating i needed to update my BIOS. I installed the update and followed the instructions to the letter. The note book would no longer start without locking up and had vertical bars about a centimeter apart on the screen. Thats a little over a quarter inch for you lame assed standardized people! After about 10 hours of frustration, cussing, hair pulling, and vowing revenge upon HP.I finally gave up trying to fix it .

Whilst surfing the net for a fix i cam across a post suggesting a guy called Mike who runs a web site called www.logonfixit.com . I called on his toll free number and told him my predicament. Mike informed me that he would try and fix it and if he couldn't their would be no charge,,as in FREE.
I downloaded a program he sent a link for and he went strait to work. This guy worked ,and not just worked i mean worked hard, late into the night trying to fix the problem.
Unfortunately the note book has Vista as a operating system so its not what i would call a stable or robust platform to try and work on in safe mode with networking enabled. Mike later found out that the only way to fix the problem is to RE Install the operating system with the start up discs. How delightful! And wouldn't you know it HP has a whole warehouse full of them and just a measly 38 bucks a pop!!! What a coincidence? In the mean time my lap top runs like a fricken rocket after Mike spent hours on it at no charge. I tried to pay him but he wouldn't accept it as he hadn't fixed the problem. So i would just like to say THANKS MIKE for your great service and hard work your the best! Now i would like to say this to HP, don't piss on my back and tell me its raining MR Hewlwtt ass packard! You caused my problem ,you should send me those disks for free!

I had a problem with windows and its a bunch of bull shit. i had a few windows updates on my hp pavillion desktop. at first when computer crashed when it began attempting to start up windows. but as far as windows support tells me that it was a problem that resulted from an error in their update download causing my computer to malfunction. well that's great right? well it got worse. they told me to attempt a couple of trouble shooting tips and when i went to start up my computer it wont even start up after turning on. the support guy told me that it was a hardware problem resulting from a software issue. they tell me i gotta find a windows support base nearby and get them to fix it. but that was bullshit since their are none! if anyone knows what i can do please tell me

You're not the only one who's got the problem,

My computer crashed, couldnt get past the start up and kept on rebooting. What really annoys me that I keep having problems with computers when Im doing very important like my degree project which has to be in next week.

I did absolutely everything under the sun by ringing Toshiba, and did all system restore stuff, with me thinking it could been a virus. It wasnt till I took to a brillant man near Wakefield who thought it would have been windows Update that may have caused the crash. Now Ive taken my old hard drive home to transfer lots of stuff that I needed to my other 'just' repaired laptop before I could take it back so that he can do repairs on them. (thank god Ive got a spare laptop)

Its just so typical of Microsoft for being crap at customer services and sending out unfinished updates knowing most of us will 'automatically' download to our system. I think from now on, Im backing absolutely everything up and switching the automatic updates off so that I can check everything before hand to see if they are not going to cause further problems to my laptop.

Surely there must be somewhere where we can go and check on the updates BEFORE we download them.

Thanks Microsoft for wasting my time whereas i should be doing my vital final year project which has to be in on Tuesday, and costing me fortune to get this problem sorted out! Am not a happy bunny at the mo.

This is just unexplainable. I too have Vista (Dell) 64 bit and learned that if I do an update it either will crash completely or will revert on next boot. There does seem no answer except to turn off the update completely. It isa mystery and I would appreciate knowing why something built into the os should ruin the os. I have spent countless time just restoring. And I was sort an experienced user. BEFORE VISTA

I have had to reload windows vista 3 time because up to may 30th 2009 my system would slow down
then turn off when i try to run a program. When i pushed the on button on my system it would not turn on
only after a few attempts. after 4 days it started again and again and when i reloaded Vista on June 4th 2009
and finished all the updates it happened the next day June 5th i'm am so fricken pissed off because i took my
system to best buy on June 2nd and they found no problems.

no this is getting out of hand i've wasted so much money of damned Microsoft equipment.

"Never ever say updating can corrupt your computer that thing don't make a common sense, the truth is you might have been downloaded infected files or thing that a window don't like, the solution is to put a new operating sysem."

kiss my butt i'm not wasting more money on a problem that started 7 days ago and i'm telling you dammit!
its the update that was put on my computer.

because this never happened since i've had my computer!!!!!!!
if those con artist at Microsoft can get a product or update that won't screw my system then i will consider using them.

but now like my fiancee i'm a mac user. because this bullshit is getting too damn old.

Same thing happened to every PC at work when people accepted the standard Windows XP Security Update.
We resolved the problem as follows:

1) We started up each PC in Safe Mode (Press F8 during boot up)
2) Went to Control Panel, then Add Remove Programs
3) Checked the box that said Show Updates
4) Found the four updates with today's date, and removed each one. We were careful to check the little box (do not reboot now) and then waited to reboot to the very end when all had been removed.

After that, each PC was fine. We also made sure to go to Windows Update settings and picked NEVER to show us these files again.

I am having the same issue. My laptop was fine until about 2-3 weeks ago when it did an automatic update. After the laptop was finished updating, it said some files are corrupted, do you want to go to a restore point. Anything other than yes, does not fix the problem. So I say yes, restore computer to previous save point. The problem does not come back until I try to load that same Microsoft Windows update. Laptop is running Vista Home Premium.
