I got the same problem today. Formatted the hard drive, re-installed Windows XP (Media Center 2005 edition), and no sound card detected.
It's a Gateway MX6650 laptop. I downloaded the supposedly appropriate driver (Conexant Audio 6.14.10.0565) from Gateway's site, but the installation always fails.

hi, u got the read me data in Conexant Audio 6.14.10.0565, which doesnt work, so u ve to go other way to install this driver.
After you have downloaded and double-clicked the file (Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565.exe), files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565 folder on the hard drive.
From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.
In Performance and Maintenance, click System.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
In Device Manager, right-click to properties
click to update driver, in the wizard box click to "no, not this time", click next, click "install from the list", then click next, on next box click to "don't search, I will choose the driver to install"
then click next, after tht appears manufracturer, click "conexant", then click model "conexant ac-link audio", then click next then start updating, in the middle of updating want a file which located
in C:\Cabs\Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565, then find the certain file from tht location then click next
after finishing updating, restart ur computer, the audio driver updating is finished,

Hi there, I just recently had a problem with my computer which caused me to have to reinstall my Windows XP Home edition. When I did and my computer loaded up I found my audio was working for the first time in 3 months since the last time.
Last time I reinstalled my xp my audio wouldn't work, so when I did it this time it works.

First and foremost, make sure your mute button is not pressed on the computer. I had a similar problem and although the volume button was showing as not muted, I pressed the un-mute button on my thinkpad and got the sound working! Sometimes, the simplest solution is the best answer!
Yeah I also just got my computer reformatted/wiped by my schools IT people. But now the only sounds I get are the system beeps, my videos will play just with no audio, same with online vids.

Tis is ery common isssue when it the operating system has been reinstalled or reformatted
see what happnes is that all of the drivers for the existing sound will be lost during formatting so if you go to www.vinal ac97 and install the audio driver this will take care of all of the problems for the sound card ok?
