Generally win vista has a inbuilt powerful firewall, us have to permit your network in to a trusted zone or else disable the firewall..one more thing is make your two devices in same workgroup in will help in easier file sharing.

Having trouble copying from XP Pro to Vista
The permissions that Vista requires seem more stringent than in XP Pro. I have happily copied from XP Pro to XP Pro for years. When copying from XP machine to Vista machine, files will copy; but when on Vista machine and trying to copy from XP, some files copied and other s didn’t.
Solution:
I tried about 50 different solutions – none worked! The XP machine has not set the permissions in a way that Vista can copy from, so you need to set them up on the XP machine.
1. Go to the folder (not file) that stores the files that won’t copy (eg. the yellow My Documents folder).
2. Right click on the folder and select PROPERTIES.
3. Select the SECURITY tab.
4. Select ADVANCED (bottom right).
5. Make sure you select the PERMISSIONS tab if it isn’t already selected.
6. Click on “Allow _ Everyone _ Modify _ ....” the lines with MODIFY on, are the ones that are preventing the files from transferring.
7. Now that the “Allow _ Everyone _ Modify _ ....” line is selected, click EDIT.
8. In the list of permissions in the next window, you’ll see some UNSELECTED boxes under the heading ALLOW.
9. SELECT each of these to give full control to the EVERYONE name.
10. Click OK
11. Place ticks in both boxes at the bottom left of this window (Advanced Security Settings window)... Box headings are ...(INHERIT FROM PARENT THE PERMISSION ENTRIES and REPLACE PERMISSION ENTRIES ON ALL CHILD OBJECTS)
12. Click OK
13. Click OK
Now the XP machine will give full rights to the VISTA machine to copy files over.
My VISTA machine has File Sharing switched on. To check this select CONTROL PANEL, then select NETWORK AND SHARING CENTRE. Under this window you can turn on a number of actions including FILE SHARING (it should be ON).
Hope this helps.

r0g4n,

your problem is most likely the workgroup settings.
Rightclick on my computer, go to the computer, networking settings, click change settings.
In there click on the change button. In there make sure the workgroup is the same as the windows xp machine.

The xp machine most likely uses MSHOME while your vista machines most likely use the workgroup WORKGROUP.

Make sure they are the same (on xp it works about the same).

The whole process can be very confusing when you try setting up your home network.
We have gone through all you need to properly set up your Vista PC networked too an XP PC or another Windows Vista PC on http://needorwanthelp.com/
I do not want to just copy and paste all here for you so it will not ping as repeated content in this blog.
Go click the link and you will see a very clear and easy to follow step by step method for networking XP and Vista PC's.

Please help,

i have a vista home premium laptop and a XP Pro desktop connected on a network which accessible by other computers. i wish to share a folder from my XP desktop and only accessible from my vista laptop by password authentification. I did the sharing but i can't mapped the drive in my vista laptop using the login name and password of my XP Pro desktop.

What has gone wrong in this case? Thanks in advanced.

Additional Info,

The workgroup for both laptop and computer are 'Workgroup' and both are running on static IP 192.168.39.XXX
under same Gateway IP address. I log in by using Administrator's account type. I had the Enable Simple File Sharing feature uncheck from the Folder Option.

I can see the XP Pro computer and the shared folder from my vista laptop but i just cannot map the drive nor just access in it by using log in ID and Password.

I got this error message during the map process :

"The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password.
To connect using a different user name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share."

Real appreciate for any fast solution.

Been a tad busy here sorry. :(

Is this shared to the rest of the net work as well or only to your laptop?
