Most DSL and Cable modems will only allow you to have 1 IP address. This means that you can only have one computer or device attached to it. When you hook a router up to your modem, it uses that 1 address, and then assigns private addresses to the computers that you plug into it. If you can't get a router, you can put 2 network cards in one of the computers, and set that computer up to share the network connection. That computer then becomes the router. A switch or a hub can be used with a router if you need more ports to connect computers to.

1st network your computers together.. (XP has a great Wizard in Control Panel). 2nd, pick one computer to directly connect to the DSL modem (this will be designated as the ICS - see Wizard). Then run Wizard on the other computer(s) (upto 10). To speedup .. see this link http://www.astahost.com/info.php/Speed-Connection-Windows-Xp_t3099.html

Oh.. I am learning too.. but using computers since 1970s.. alittle MSCSE courses helped too!
