Vista doesn't recognise 2nd SATA Hard Drive

Hello,

I recently had a hard disk failure so re-installed Vista on what was my secondary drive.

I then purchased a Hitachi 500g SATA drive. Unfortunately Vista will not recognise the drive. It doesn't show up in Disk Management. At times it will show in BIOS but not always, and even then it doesn't show in Vista.

Anyone any ideas?

Many thanks,

Phil

Configuration: Windows Vista Home Premium

My Dell XPS is having the same issue but with XP. When i reloaded XP onto my computer I had to go into the Bios and change SATA operation settings to Combination instead of ACHI so Windows would start up...but ever since then it will not recognize my extra hard drive as long as I keep it in Combo mode.

I am having the same problem with my Windows VISTA. I found this instructional video on You Tube, and will give it a try. Thought you might want to do the same. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JyOPfBgGXs . Good luck...

I had the same problem after installing vista on a new Harddrive and reconecting a second (previous connected) SATA drive.

i found that in my case another solution was needed (with thnx to the youtube movie)

goto:
control panel -> Administrative Tools - > Computer Management
in there choose ' storage' => 'disk management'

there i found my second disk as 'Foreign Disk' , just rightmouse click this and choose 'Import Foreign Disk' (confirm)
and presto! the harddisk is back!

i hope this will help someone!

Yup, this was the problem.

You're new disk drive is running in RAW format and needs to be formatted into something Windows can use. I use NTFS.

I started the formatting process and after a day or so I was able to use the new Disk Drive *1TB takes a while to format :*(

Thanks for the help!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I had tried every trick I knew in an effort to get Windows 7 (beta) to work with my 2nd SATA drive (installed in an Acer 5640 desktop). I even tried installing Vista (yuk! -- and it still had the drive recognition issue) and XP (couldn't get past the Blue Screen of Death during install).

I was just about to give up when I found your post about "import" of a "foreign" disk.

By the way, Computer Management now lists the drive as "dynamic" instead of "foreign" (or the usual "basic"). But it WORKS FINE!.

Symbiot thanks a lot. thats exactly what was needed. Vista has some oddities that i just dont understand why they changed things the way they did, but they still all function...mostly

Windows 7 users: Start-->right click Computer-->Manage-->Storage-->Disk Management. My second hard drive (both 1TB Western Digitals) was listed as offline. Right click the disc number (mine was Disc 3) and select online. You should be good to go - it worked for me!

Inkslinger's tip was exactly what I needed. After fiddling with my bios with no result, All I had to do was assign a drive letter and it showed up in my computer. Perfect.
