Hi guys - my start menu and task bar have disappeared tonight and am not sure why this is. I have used task manager to try and run my antivirus but i am also not able to open that.
I have also tried the restore DLL from this site http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm but that does not work either.

I have used Hijack this and got the below:

Most likely "explorer.exe" crashed. Try running "explorer.exe" from task manager. Look at your event viewer under your computer manager console (compmgmt.msc) and try to find what's causing "explorer.exe" to crash. Also, make sure your taskbar is not just set to autohide.

I got a similar problem:

at windows (vista) startup I got My Documents opened but the explorer don't launch (and don't start toolbar, systray, menu, nothing..) !

I found the solution here ( http://www.techsupportforum.com/... ) !

My HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon has a Shell field that was to "Explorer.exe C:\Windows\Config\csrss.exe" updated probably in some windows update procedure. And I change to "Explorer.exe" only. AND WORKS!

The "C:\Windows\Config\csrss.exe" didn't exist for me, and I think the PROBLEM was exactly this.. probably explorer don't start because the csrss didn't exist (makes sense).

When I returned from Tokyo, my computer's explorer.exe was giving me real issues. I didn't want to pay someone a bunch of money to fix an easy solution. I want tell you THANK YOU. You saved me a heart attack and a burn't pocket.

Go to the bottom of screen and you should be able to pull it up if not right click at the bottom and untick lock taskbar
