Starting your computer in safe mode is only the first step. I have fixed computers with a virus like the one your describe. Assuming you successfully get into safe mode you will need to log in as Administrator. Then you must install an antivirus. I recommend Avast from www.avast.com. You can download it on another comp and put it on a CD to use on the infected machine. When it asks if you want to run a boot scan say yes, but DON'T restart the computer yet.

Run a full scan immediately after installing the program. Tel it to clean everything it finds. If it can't clean the file, delete the files. You are likely infected with a virus that infects every .exe file on your system including explorer.exe, the file responsible for your icons and taskbar. After running that scan you can restart your computer and let the boot scan run.

After the boot scan completes you need to uninstall Avast, and then resinstall it and run it again. I know it sounds like alot of work, but this is a nasty virus.

Hi guys, first time i've needed to post, usually just check some of the great suggestions on this site, but now i'm stumped.

Pato i have the same problem with my PC, is it possible to fix this issue by booting from another hard drive with windows xp? I have Avast ready to go (currently have AVG free), hijackthis and a number of other programs and regesdit options from numerous forums like this. I just need to be able to access cmd prompt at the very least.

Cheers

I have the same problem. Though I have not solved the issue, I discovered a temporary workaround accidentally. After you get the wallpaper, bring up the task manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+Delete. Then select the 'New Task' button and type 'cmd' to bring up command prompt. At the command prompt type 'explorer' to bring up windows explorer and voila! the icons should appear.

Access to Task manger is denied, no access at all on windows screen. Managed to get it going in safe mode to get serial before that shut down permanately too. Complete reinstallation. Sorted.

I had no desktop and task manger was disabled, try starting in safe mode and copy your explorer icon from another computer to get explorer back up oj startup. I'd say if yours has got to that stage then you might want to think about reinstalling windows which is what i did. I lost my disk so i had to get my serial number off in safe mode, then download a windowsxp iso again on another computer (lucky i have a laptop!). I read there are ways to save any data that you want to keep, but by that stage i decided to just wipe it all and start with a fresh install. First thing i did after was purchase Trend Micro Pro, no more free antivirus software for me...Is there anything else i can do to protect my computer, aside from watch ing what i download? Trend Micro is my new firewall and it seems quite comprehensive in terms of antivirus protection.

Hi,
the best way to solve this problem is :
press ALT+CTRL+DEL
then NEW TASK and enter C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\msconfig
then you go to TOLLS and then SYSTEM RESTORE.
enter the date for restore and all ok after restart.

I have the same problem but with an additional twist. I have no desktop icons or task bar, just the wallpaper. Right clicking on the desktop or CTR+ALT+DEL get no response. In addition, the system automatically logs me off after a minute or 2 no matter what account I log in under. All of this happens even if I try booting into safe mode.
I connected to the C: drive from another PC and all of my desktop folders, icons, etc. are in the 'desktop' folder so they are not wiped out. I ran a virus scan of the C: drive from the other computer using McAfee but it didn't find anything. Also tried copying the explorer.exe file from my good PC but that also had no affect. All of my documents, favorites, etc. are on a NAS drive so they are OK.
Before I wipe and reinstall the system, anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks
