Hello,

I have an external hard drive that stopped working. It turns on, however, it makes three clicking sounds and doesn't get to boot up. Is there a way to get the data out? Please help!

Thanks!

Put your drive in a zip lock back and throw it in the freezer for about 1/2 hour to see if this will align the parts inside.

Make sure is completely dry and try it again.

on the old pc's you could also hit the drive sligthly and some times it worked...you may also want to try the drive in a different computer to make sure is not the controller the problem.

Hi there I had the exact same problem with my toshiba external hard drive the problem seemed to be the pcb board inside. the solution was quite simple... take out the two small screws in the bottom then prize off the back panel which is held on with glue then take out the 4 more screws you can see and slide the cover off, next unscrew the hard drive from the frame and you will see that it is a western digital standard ide hard drive. next insert a slave jumper onto the pins if applicable and connect the hard drive to a spare ide socket inside your tower case and connect the power lead also. then boot up your computer and wait for the drivers to install automatically. you will now be able to not only see your hard drive and recover the data but also keep using it for storage if desired. good luck!

Apparently it's the power adapter that's at fault, I read this on another forum.
