My iBook is now doing the same thing. It opens to a screen that has a flashing ? alternatiing with a flashing Finder icon. Did you ever resolve the problem? If so, how?

You have to choose a start up disc, if you wait for a while the apple icon will appear. after it opens the desktop you will have to open the preferences and click on startup disc and choose the icon that says mac osx on your harddrive name

If it never does try putting in your os disc in restart you computer and hold the letter c down, this will cause to boot up with your cd.

I had the same problem as my disk drive died 2 years ago, so I can't run an OSX disk... And yesterday the flashin icon appeared yet again. After trying about 10 times to start the iBook, it finally rebooted. I then discovered via a warning message that my system had revereted to 1970... What that means is that my internal battery is dead... Am now looking at how to crack open the iBook, and how to replace the battery, to see if this prevents future occurrences of the flashing icon problem.

I'm trying to help an acquaintance get his iBook G4 working. It, too, flashes alternately between a file folder icon with a squarehead face and a question mark. After a bit of experimenting, I discovered (I didn't notice anyone else mention this in the answers on the forum) that pressing the "Options" key brings up a different screen, but my problems don't end there.

I'm faced with what must be a standard log-in screen (I'm not a Mac user!): a large lock image followed by a very narrow edit window, followed by a right-arrow image.

Even though the fellow supplied me with the correct password, I can't get past this screen. Sometimes the keys don't register unless I press very hard; other times, a string of dots appears in the edit window, as if there were a stuck key (but there's not).

Any suggestions what to try next??

Thanks.
