| 2 Calico, on Nov 19, 2008 11:20:23 pm GMTOh great, thats the same thing that happen to my laptop. Now I have to send it away to get it fixed..BAH Reply to Calico | 3 Nanor, on Dec 9, 2008 12:10:11 am GMTI had the same problem with my HP DV6599. On power on the screen would stay black, no POST, nothing at all on the display. The HDD would spin up but the HDD indicator would not come on and would not boot. The DVD drive would spin up and attempt to read a disc if one was in the tray but still would not boot. I found an answer on another forum. Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. It worked for me! Just shutdown, put the battery back in you're good to go. Worked for me so definitely worth a try. It seems that the inverter on your laptop is broken, it can be purchased on ebay for 20 to 40 USD and replaced. They will sometimes even send you a guide on how to replace it. You can also send it to a service center, but that will cast a lot. search for your model on ebay and see if you can find an inverter there. Reply to pinasco |

| 15 Nick, on Jan 3, 2009 1:52:52 am GMTWow, I tried everything. My laptop screen would remain black on boot and when the laptop was opened from a closed position(when running), the HDD would keep rebooting. HP tech support told me to 1. Reset BIOS, 2. Reinstall Power Management, 3. Disable Restart Option. Step 4: Start up Repair. I went through all the steps but no avail. Finally, I landed here somehow and so far has worked like magic !. I was about to reinstall Vista or buy another laptop as I was told that the problem was with the screen and it was better to buy a new computer than spend the same amount on new screen ! Thanks a ton ! Reply to Nick | 54 lucky_009_, on Feb 4, 2009 5:45:47 am GMTI just bought a acer mini laptop, i've only had it for about 5 days, and it's doing the same rebooting thing along with a blue screen of death, was wondering what you did to solve this problem and if you could help me out, or should i just return it in hopes that they exchange it... thx plz write back Reply to lucky_009_ | 197 tarantula_pinky_eater, on Sep 5, 2009 6:55:40 pm BSTHey, I would call acer on that because when my bios went out they walked me step by step on flashing it from a USB. If they can't fix it then it's a 30 day warranty. Even with installed software the OS is supposed to stay "alive" for at least 30 days.
I asked my professor at ITT, to collaborate and he aggreed, even suggested that you try the second partition restore. 5 days you shouldn't have that much personal stuff but i could be wrong.

Thank you, I've been having the same problem with my Pavilion dv2125. I've tried everything and the only thing that has worked is turning the dam thing on and off until it wakes up. I've spent hours messing with it....extremely frustrating. Definately seems as though the low power sleep state has something to do with it. I wish HP was more proactive in helping resolve problems like this. I will try your solution the next time this happens to me and let you know the outcome. Did your computer repeat this behavior after you found a way to turn it back on?
Thank You, Reply to 2808 |
| Nanor, many thanks. This has just worked for an HP Pavilion dv5000 series. Had been working on battery; battery and memory getting low; restarted. Closed lid to move to another room and connected to mains. Opened lid, laptop would not resume, black screen, no h/d activity, power light on and not blinking. Would not crash, either on mains or on low battery. Allowed laptop to cool for half an hour in case overheating might be the problem. Tried inserting HP recovery disk, a short burst of h/d activity which was not sustained; re-inserted recovery disc and tried repeated F8 key in few seconds during brief time while h/d remained active, nothing. Found your tip using another laptop, followed your instructions and whatever had caused the lock up was sorted and booted first time.

Reply to michelle | 85 Jabe, on Mar 21, 2009 5:10:35 pm GMTI have seen these symptoms on two of my grandchildren's DV9000 notebooks. I tried the 60 second power switch fix, but it did not work. I suspect this is a lid switch module problem, but I have not varified this. I did discover the following workaround after hours of trouble shooting.
1) Power off
2) Open the lid to about 30 degrees, enough to be able to access the power switch.
3) Press the power switch to power up, leaving the lid partially opened.
4) After the operating system is running the lid can be opened completely. Reply to Jabe |

| 38 CochlearGuy, on Jan 21, 2009 3:25:39 pm GMTI have the exact same problem as you describe. I tried doing what you suggest to no avail. I even left it unplugged with the battery out overnight. I tried unplugging the power, taking out the battery and pushing power button for 60 seconds. Still having the problem. Screen stays blank and an icon flashed showing the computer locked. If I take it apart, I wonder if I can get it all back together again. Figured it won't hurt to take it apart. It stays in lock mode --might even throw it in the dumpster. Not sure yet--still curious at the time to see if a solution can be found. smiles Reply to CochlearGuy | 124 casey, on May 13, 2009 2:38:08 pm BSTSeems like you and I are in the same boat at this point -- especially at the throwing in the dumpster part. | 199 armychk, on Sep 7, 2009 5:30:58 am BSTMy problem was my system would start (screen included). After I put in my screen password, it would load and promptly turn black. Everything was still on and running, but the screen was black. I used Nanor's solution a couple times. Finally, I held the power button down for several minutes, then I restarted my HP laptop. Also upon my system booting, I played with the external monitor and the increase brightness buttons. I have a dv6436. So, the buttons I used were fn + F4 and fn + F8. It eventually worked. YAY!!!!!!! The store I shall abbreviate as BB to keep their anonymity ;-) told me it would be $299 to run advanced diagnostics testing. That's $299 before fixing anything!!!!!! As soon as they told me that, I left with my laptop. Thanks Joe and Nanor! Reply to armychk |

This works. 100% Please people do try all of the options suggested in these forums before submitting yourself (and your wallet) to the asymmetry of information that has been working to the benefit of car mechanics and now computer "repair specialists" for years. Are you talking about HP having an additional warrenty for the problem with the screen going black? We have tried several fixes and nothing seems to work.
Thanks so much

| 178 lady, on Aug 6, 2009 4:08:40 am BSTI can not thank you enough. I was so upset and miserable when the above happened to my new laptop. An Acer.
I followed the instructions to a T and was over the moon when it worked. I can still hardly believe it.
I thank you so much for your own search and the generosity of placing it here for others to read.
My heartfelt thanks again and again.

| 219 pinny, on Oct 26, 2009 3:30:56 pm GMTHi i had the same problem with my dv4000 the screen wouldnt show up however the power was going on , so i tried following your advice but it didnt get me far the screen still didnt work so i went online and searched for a screen and bumped into a website called www.laptopmaven.com and they told me to plug the laptop into a external monitor and see if it works , so i plugged it in to a external monitor and it worked so they told me that chances are that i need a new screen or inverter so first i tried a different inverter and it didnt help then i tried a new screen which i bought from them and it helpd and it worked so they really helped me a lot thanks to the laptop maven Reply to pinny |

| 226 Venkat, on Nov 10, 2009 2:40:12 pm GMTI have Toshiba Satellite laptop and it was working fine yesterday. I have plugged-in it with AC Adapter and the AC Adapter has the GREEN light. On front of the laptop, the power supply light (Blue LED) is blinking and the battery light is in RED. Nothing happens after pressing the Power button on the laptop. Thought of faulty AC Adapter and bought the new AC Adapter and the power supply light (Blue LED) is still blinking. How to fix this problem, PLEASE.
Thanks. Reply to Venkat |

| 70 G, on Feb 28, 2009 12:59:28 pm GMTYes and when I rec've my acer back from repairs-it was stripped-blank, only with windows...not even a single driver left on it. What the hell!? No note, no reinstall disk/thumbdrive...Nuthin. Remember there isn't even a disk drive on it. Reply to G |
