Hello,
I have an older desktop running Win XP (2001-2003?). I recently moved and I can't seem to connect to my new household's wireless router. I tried repairing my connections and checking the modem/router (all bueno). Under Network connections there are 3 icons, 2 of them (Wireless Network connection & 1394 connection) indicate that they are both connected and seem to be functioning fine, the third icon (Local Area Connection 6) says network cable un-plugged. I think that it was like that (indicating un-plugged) before I moved and was working OK but I'm not positive about it. The other people in the house have no problems (both running windows) connecting and I am at my wits end with it. I know I need a new PC but I have to get by with this beast for at least the rest of the year. Please Help!

First are you using zone alarm?

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/07/09/microsoft-update-kills

If not then

check you are getting an IP adress from your router (ADSL modem)

run 'cmd'

type 'ipconfig' both without quotes

This will display your computers IP address

if you get an IP like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
rather than 192.168.xxx.xxx

then your computer is not picking up its IP automatically.
It might be that your XP computer is not set-up for DHCP (not likely as it was before)

It means though that unless you resolve this part you won't be able to connect.

If you have a 'good' IP and you can see your gateway IP (the internal IP address of your ADSL modem) then you can ping that IP with 'ping 192.168.xxx.xxx' form the command line, again no quotes

IF you get replies then good so far...

Maybe check and repost (just incase you have zone alarm!!)

I tried what you said above about the ping etc...get error 1231. No ip address detected. The other laptop in the house can detect the wireless and can get online just fine. Mine is the laptop that was set up as the #1 hub computer but after some Windows updates ran recently I can no longer get on the internet.
