Laptop freezes on startup

Hello,
basically the same problem as most of you.
I start up my laptop and windows vista starts to load, the bar going across the screen, then about halfway through the bar stops, and the entire laptops freezes. the only way to turn is to press the button and then when it try's to identify the problem it doesn't find one. it'll start in safe mode, but i cant get on the internet to see if downloading a update will fix it.

if any one can help that would be sweet.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 3.0

Try "safe mode with networking", unless Vista doesn't have that. Networking = Internets, unless you just mean that there's no internet hooked to that computer itself.
