Hello,

I just bought a brand new computer today and after about 30 minutes it just shut down, no warning, it completely lost power and did not restart/turn back on, it just crashed.

So I started it up, not thinking too much of it and about 5 minutes later it did it again, and again when I started it back up after only 1-2 minutes. I took a wild guess and removed the USB cable and had no other problems, I plugged it back in after starting my OS (windows XP) and it shut down immediately after recognizing the connection.

I've read all I can about this issue and can't seem to find any solutions.
I've tried resetting the connection through CMD, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling ALL USB drivers, yet nothing seems to work.

Some things to know that might be useful:
My cable is on a lynxis router connected to a modem.. I actually have two other computers connected from the same router right now.
I've tried switching cords from a working computer, it still shuts down instantly after connecting.
After uninstalling my drivers and having them automatically re-installed, I was able to stay connected to the internet for about 5 minutes before it instantly shut down, as oppose to it shutting down as soon as I plugged the USB cable in.

That's all.. any help/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Configuration: Windows XP
Firefox 2.0.0.16

Hello,

I have the same problem.
I power up PC, start Windos XP. And I have no problems. But when I connecto some usb pendrive, usb printer cable or when I plug the ethernet cable of the integrated motherboard card, the pc shut down. No blue screen, no repport. It's like a power loss.

Same here. I'd try turning off "allow USB to bring comp out of standby" It work for me.

You can do this in Device manager/ USB Root Hub/Properties/Power management

Cheers

It sounds like the power supply is not big enough.

I precisely had the same problem happening to a customer of mine.

You can try and delete all USB drivers under "device manager", run a restart so that windows can reinstall them.

I would also suggest updating the motherboard bios and chipset drivers. Just find out your motherboard make and model (it's also written on the physical motherboard itself) and then go to their site to download the motherboard bios, apply it, then install the chipset drivers.

Last but not least, I was able to cure the problem by disabling USB 2.0 support through the BIOS. On computer startup, it'll have "Press <DEL> to enter setup> or some other key. Once in, disable USB 2.0 support and that actually fixed the problem in my case as the user didn't mind the slower speed (just needed USB for printing).

Hope it all works out!

I had exactly this problem: when i tried to boot with the internet (ethernet / lan ) cable in, sometimes it would boot up, sometimes it would start, but then calmly shut off! i tried reinstalling drivers for the mortyherboard, and for the ethernet card etc etc. BUT THE ANSWER WAS SIMPLE - I HAD TOO MANY DEVICES ATTACHED VIA MY USB PORTS. If i unplugged a few usbS the problem disappeared, and to address the lack of power from the main machine, I bought a POWERED usb hub very cheaply. All problems were clearly due to me overloading the power supply. Now solved, computer great now. Hope this helps someone!
